Description Before dawn the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were dropped behind Utah Beach to secure four causeways across flooded plains to protect the invasion's west flank. The 82nd Airborne consisted of three parachute regiments and one regiment of airborne infantry landing in gliders. These regiments were to drop west of the 101st Airborne on either side of the Meredet River, and secure the town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise.

At 2:00am the main body of the 82nd Airborne landed in Normandy. For the most part the drops were a complete mess. The majority of the men missed their drop zones and landed in the flooded plains on the banks of the Meredet River. It took several hours for the majority of men to regroup with their original groups. Eventually a force of approximately 110 men assaulted the town of Sainte-Mere-Eglise, and by 5:00am had achieved their objective.

The scattered soldiers would eventually regroup after the capture of Sainte-Mere-Eglise and proceed to their missions. In the end, the paratrooper's wide dispersion benefited the invasion. With paratroopers dropped in so many locations, the Germans were not able to develop adequate responses to the airborne and amphibious assaults.
