What have the gaming public been buying this week via digital distribution platform Steam? Lots of sequels, well, at least for the top two spots. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 somehow managed to be the biggest seller, and it was closely followed by Left 4 Dead 2. While strictly not a sequel, Dragon Age: Origins also performed well, with the standard and deluxe editions both selling a bunch of copies. The top five was rounded out by Borderlands.

Each week, we collate the most popular stories that we published over the past seven days, plus a lineup of the most downloaded files added in the same timeframe. That way, in case you missed something, you can catch up in one helpful little spot, every Monday morning.
Last week, our video review of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 proved to be the most popular. Another big title, Dragon Age: Origins was also popular, giving PC gamers, and RPG fans something to celebrate about. Some new Unreal engine freeware, Prometheus made its way into the news, thanks to the Unreal Development Kit, and the top five was rounded out by Infinity Ward's announcement that people who purchased Modern Warfare 2 early wouldn't be punished. Nice.

Over the last decade, there have been some pretty amazing innovations made in the technology sector, particularly the games industry. The sort of stuff you could only dream about back in the 90s is effectively today's reality. Yet even as some of these innovations are made, other aspects of the games industry's products seem to be devolving from where they were previously.
This week on The Warp Pipe, we'll take a look at a few examples of the industry's backwards and forwards movement.

Last week, censorship of games dominated the top two spots, with much woe expressed by Australian gamers to the watered down version of Left 4 Dead 2 that we will be getting. Other censorship issues were also raised, and ways to tweak the PC version of Borderlands also proved to be popular. Our hands on with Alien vs. Predator was also enticing to many, and more outrage was directed towards Infinity Ward due to the fact that Modern Warfare 2 on the PC will not feature a developer console, preventing PC gamers from tweaking the game's performance.

There have been a couple of sleepless nights at The Warp Pipe household lately; a large rat getting into the crawlspace and scurrying along the walls, a set of nearby security lights staying on all night, and some exam related panic from my partner all contributed to reduced snoozing hours.
The inability to sleep usually results in deep thought, and it just so happened that most of these thoughts were related to video games, so this week we'll have a look at a couple of random video game related thoughts.

A little bit of us all died when Duke Nukem Forever bit the dust earlier in the year. Even though the game's development had become a ridiculous joke, there was still some incling that we'd all play that game one day.
Regardless of future of the series, we'll always have Duke Nukem 3D, which just happens to be this week's Retro Roadtest.

You've heard the stories of old men who build churches singlehandedly as a labour of love, right? Well meet Stallion83, the young gentleman who's put a very modern twist on this old school phenomenon.
Stallion runs a site called 1 million Gamerscore and aims to hit this milestone by 2015. For someone with slightly over 9000 points and whose forward-planning is limited to "must finish AC2 before MW2 comes out on Tuesday", this sounds absolutely crazy-wild.

RedLynx, developer of Trials has admitted to putting a modified version of the game on the internet as part of a "guerilla promotion" campaign.
The "pirated" version of the game was missing access to the Leaderboards, a component that RedLynx boss Tero Virtala called the "actual soul" of the title. Purchasing the full version remains the only way to access them.

Direct2Drive is refusing to sell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as it features Steam as a not-very-well hidden "trojan horse."
A statement on the order page for the game (how cruel!) says they "believe strongly that when you buy a game from us, you shouldn't be forced to install and run a 3rd party software client to be able to play the game you purchased."
While MW2 obviously falls into that category, the company hasn't been quite so rigorous in the past...
