Times are tough. If you can't afford to fill up the Lear Jet, or get the Enzo serviced, you might like to check out the following games. They've all got one thing in common - they're all 100% free to download and play. Just the thing to perk you up after you've been forced to let go of your Butler's PA.

Has it really been two years since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare already? Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex Edition has arrived on Wii at the exact moment that owners of Modern Warfare (those who didn't bother with a boycott, anyway) are abandoning the original in favour of Modern Warfare 2. It may be late to the party, but the Wii's lack of good, non-Metroid FPS games means that there's still a massive market hungry for this port of an ageing yet still impressive title.

Do you remember how Mass Effect was going to be this enormous universe constantly expanding through gallons of DLC? And how what we actually got was two measly episodes, one on a rock and one in some corridors?
We never learn! Just look at the Internet explode in fannish glee over BioWare's comments on the breadth, depth, length height and extent of the DLC to be made available for Mass Effect 2.

I love living in the age of digital distribution. Sure, there's an argument to be made against the potential for the industry to abuse the system, releasing incomplete games and then charging for the lost content, or even worse, releasing games in a broken state. But my point is, broken games can now actually be fixed.
Of the recent flurry of releases, I'm rating Tekken 6 as "most in need of fixing", so thank goodness the patch is coming Thursday.

Radio? Does that even still exist? It certainly does, and the ABC's Radio National service remains an important part of many Australians' engagement with political matters.
Everyone's favourite anti-R18 Attorney General Michael Atkinson turned up on the airwaves a few days ago to speak on the subject, where his comments were met by Gamers4Croydon's David Doe.

I'm sure you all remember the trouble Fallout 3 had getting past the Classification Board, and the resulting hasty editing out of explicit drug references.
Did that bother you? Then be thankful you're not a Japanese gamer. Bethesda's Japanese localisation team had to "bend over backwards" to get the post-apocalyptic FPS RPG hybrid on to shelves, and sacrificed an entire mission path as well as some of the more extreme violence.

So, how about that IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey, eh? Pretty good, right? Action packed, pretty to look at, decent controls - definitely a contender for best ever WWII flying sim, isn't it?
Well, on the PlayStation 3, not so much, and due to "considerable player demand", 505 Games have promised a patch very, very soon. The best bit? More joystick and keyboard support. Hurrah!

Pre-order bonuses. Maps, amulets, character models and more. They're meant to entice us into laying down our credit card at a preferred retailer, but instead have become annoying reminders that there's more great content out there that we're not playing.
The latest offender? Assassin's Creed 2.

As much as I would like to spin this story into two separate articles, there are only so many ways you can repeat "game to film conversions repeatedly disappoint". But it's Tight-arse Tuesday, so we can't overlook two recent bits of movie news: Brad Pitt has taken on Dark Void, and the ever-popular Uwe Boll is to deliver another BloodRayne.

Microsoft are still playing extremely coy when it comes to Project Natal, but they know as well as we do that developer support is going to be essential if they want their camera controller to be more than a three game gimmick, and leaks are beginning to appear.
Even if they weren't spilling secrets left, right, and centre, we know developers have already got their hands on the device. They'll need to have done their homework for the Gamesfest training sessions in February.

You probably have a bog-standard copy, but some enterprising importers might have already secured themselves a copy of the Creator's Edition of LittleBigPlanet on the PSP, which has received a limited European release.
They don't have much to gloat over, though; Media Molecule have responded to complaints over non-functioning game features with the distressing news that a fix is not expected for two weeks.

Monday morning was a scene of chaos after a fun-filled and computer-less weekend, which is basically my way of denying responsibility for missing the Left 4 Dead 2 update. If you're still languishing in the grips of graphic bugs when taking a shottie to a tank, or the notorious Charger issue, then you probably missed it, too.

Akella has made another update to the PT Boats: Knights of the Sea development blog. The latest report from the Russian developer touches on the issue of how damage is modeled, and hints at the considerable attention to detail that has gone into simulating armour, displacement, the effect of collisions, and so forth. Yet while there are plenty of realistic effects in this WWII naval combat game, the manner in which they are simulated has been tweaked to increase the its appeal:
"When developing PT Boats: Knights of the Sea, we tried to reach the golden mean between realism and interesting gameplay that would bring a lot of fun to the gamers who are fond of simulation and strategy..."
