Though you may have guessed it, a press release confirmed this morning that the Destiny beta was incredibly popular. Closing last week, Bungie and Activision have announced that 4,638,937 unique players participated in the beta, making it the “biggest beta of this console generation,” and “the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date.” Check out the full press release below.

Sydney, NSW – July 31, 2014 – Activision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI), and Bungie today confirmed millions of people have played their upcoming and award-winning game Destiny during their beta test to gather vital information in preparation for launch.  The Destiny Beta included a sampling of major activities featured in the full game. The beta began first on PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 on July 17 and came to a close Sunday evening, with 4,638,937 unique players participating.

“This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th.”

“We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta,” said Pete Parsons, COO of Bungie. “We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

I’m actually surprised it was that few …. honestly would have thought atleast 6million …

@Spooler – probably more if it was on PC :|

….yes I’m bitter

Haha get a PS4 and become *starts chanting* “one of us, one of us !”

I played it and it definitely sold me on the game. Hopefully it will justify having bought the PS4!

PS3 was a shockingly blurry mess so I wouldn’t bother with this unless it was on PC either. I wasn’t in love with what I played of the beta either tbh.

eh…for one game? I hate FPS on console too, I’d have to buy a k/b+m adapter.

It was close though, I really like the look of it.

It looks awful you really cannot appreciate the true glory of Destiny without play it and believe me I hate console FPS just as much as you, probably more I’m rull retard with a controller when it comes to FPS but Destiny is worth the pain and money really it’s a fantastic experience.
