Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer not as popular as Black Ops 2 on PC

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: Ghosts, Infinity Ward’s 2013 release, isn’t holding its player base as well as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Treyarch’s 2012 effort, on PC.

On Steam yesterday, Ghosts peaked at about 4,500 players, which isn’t bad – but Black Ops 2 peaked at over 9,000. Even 2009′s Modern Warfare 2 (4,700) and 2011′s Modern Warfare 3 (6,200) did better than Ghosts, actually.

This is a trend we’ve never seen in the Call of Duty series before. Although some of the older games have had long, strong tails, the latest version always trumps – and that’s not the case this time. Of course, we don’t know how the console versions are faring.

Let’s speculate on whether this is a blip in the series or whether the giant that is the Call of Duty franchise is running out of steam. Are you on board for Advanced Warfare this year?

mebbe its cos ppl are getting sick of the same thing over n over again??

no?

seems logical to me

Its called dedicated servers. Even playing field. Treyarch always did their COD’s well and thought of the PC community.

Pretty much this. They keep making new maps which are just reskinned from previous games. Game is stupidly overpriced too, MW2 has only just been reduced in price on steam but still not at cheap as what you can by BF for.

aliensf,

This. Remember when everyone hated Treyarch for doing *another* WW2 FPS. Not so bad now, eh? Not that I like either developer or play COD any more, but Treyarch are clearly the best of the 2(3?). They’re all still terrible though.

They aren’t taking CoD MW into account which trumps all of them numbers wise. Blops 2 only has number due to being the last one that most people have. I’d go back to Blops 1 or WaW before re-installing Blops 2, MW2 or 3. The dedicated servers are just better full stop.

The second part of the equation is the lack of PC support by Ghosts and the IW releases. Blops 2 may have had poor PC support but it was better than all the other P2P ones. They should just drop the P2P crap as the engine still has support for Dedicated servers…

A combination of that and the fact that Ghosts is the worst CoD yet.

I picked it up cheap to play single player but the thing ran horribly no matter what setting i put it on, I guess it ran like that in multiplayer too. I went back to BF4 with a solid 120fps.

I’m even surprised by that number. It’s not like pc gamers really like COD (except for mw1) anyways. Im sure console numbers more than make up the difference.

lex,

Yep, it had very high system requirements despite the fact that it didn’t look that great.

Ok. First off, I dont want to hear about battlefield. That game is trash and COD DEVS had it right that most FPS fans want a more run and gun style multiplayer then what BF has to offer. Call of duty ghosts was just soo blatantly bad for a number of reasons but more importantly continued the more negative aspects of the recent CODs. Such as horribly small maps, pointless one sided maps, bad spawning, and numerous useless guns in every class. For me the color scheme, graphics, guns, maps, and spawns just did it in for me. Only COD ive returned for being bad.

Ghosts was shocking, they should never had released it on pc in the condition it was when it was released. I only buy 2-3 games a year but COD is one of them. I’ll be getting the next COD but if PC is neglected again then im jumping ship. (not to battlefield though, never liked the feel of it although hardline beta was fun)

Yeh this year’s a tough choice for me between COD advanced warfare and BF Hardline. might wait a week after BF:H release and examine the multiplayer numbers, buy it, if i dont enjoy it take advantage of origins return policy. I DID enjoy the beta immensely though, more so than the chaotic BF4. And I always enjoy COD’s story, but dont really spend enough time on the MP to get good.

EDIT: plus im 32, so im shit regardless of how much i play :P

Sounds like debating the differences between faeces and manure.

Now, back to tweaking my latest arma 3 mission design.

I think that’s a bit of a narrow view you have there, one that is very limited to your personal bias of running and gunning. Admittedly CoD does have a place for me, but it’s been a long time since I can say I liked a CoD game properly. The small maps were a result of pushing the gfx envelope which resulted in worse gameplay with each subsequent IW release. Treyarch at least tried to keep PC up to date with their iteration’s, but it got harder for them to do so with the switch by the then lead team to a P2P game structure. Which was utter crap.

Gameplay wise CoD MW, WaW and Blops were ok, nothing stellar but ok. Softcore was too slow for me especially with the low ammo counts and bulletsoak that occurred. Hence I tended to play Hardcore mode, which in turn led to tube spam and a lot of run and gun with automatic weapons. Personally I preferred to play the single shot game with a high powered gun of some sort (not a sniper rifle) but when it came to the P2P games, it was just a waste of time. All the fun was removed when someone with 200+ ping lags out a lobby and you ended up unable to shoot the bastard because of lag compensation which ultimately harmed those with good pings more than those with bad pings. Which then introduced the lag switching etc…
