The juggernaut groans. Is it too large to fall?

Call of Duty: Ghosts, Infinity Ward’s 2013 release, isn’t holding its player base as well as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Treyarch’s 2012 effort, on PC.
On Steam yesterday, Ghosts peaked at about 4,500 players, which isn’t bad – but Black Ops 2 peaked at over 9,000. Even 2009′s Modern Warfare 2 (4,700) and 2011′s Modern Warfare 3 (6,200) did better than Ghosts, actually.
This is a trend we’ve never seen in the Call of Duty series before. Although some of the older games have had long, strong tails, the latest version always trumps – and that’s not the case this time. Of course, we don’t know how the console versions are faring.
Let’s speculate on whether this is a blip in the series or whether the giant that is the Call of Duty franchise is running out of steam. Are you on board for Advanced Warfare this year?
