BioShock development to continue under 2K Marin, says Take Two

BioShock 2

By on June 1, 2014 at 1:52 pm

The BioShock franchise will not end with the shutdown of Irrational Games, as 2K confirm late on Friday that stewardship of the series will fall to 2K Marin.

2K Marin have previously been responsible for BioShock 2, which was quite well received, but that was before the studio was hit with massive layoffs in the wake of the poor performance of The Bureau: XCOM Declassified.

Speaking to analysts at a recent conference, Take Two’s megaboss Strauss Zelnick commented that “We haven’t given any color on how you should think about it yet except we do believe it’s beloved. We think it’s important [and] certainly something that we’re focused on, something 2K Marin will be responsible for shepherding going forward. I don’t want to say much else except to agree with you. I think there’s a lot of upside in that franchise.”

“It hasn’t necessarily been realized yet. And the question for the future, assuming we decide to answer the question, would be ‘How do you stay true to that creatively?’ ‘How do you do something exciting?’ and ‘How do you do expand the market?’ That would be the natural drill. We’re starting from a good point on it. And certainly it’s been a great piece of business for us. It’s been a profitable piece of business.”

Yep sounds great, I mean 2K Marin developed Bioshock 2 and everybody loved that didn’t they?

Wow, nothing like handing an award winning franchise to the group who did the only one in the series that was utter drivel.

I note that the original idea for biooshock 2 as envisaged by some of the Aussie devs was before the fall of rapture and a film noir style detective story.

Yep Marin is obviously the best place for bioshock.

People didn’t like Bioshock 2?
Huh..
Was better than Infinite at any rate.
Probably not as good as the first one admittedly however.

Yeah! When someone comes up with something as inventive as Bioshock
it has to be a pretty hard act to follow, but I did like Bio 2.
Infinite, yeah, a bit meh !

Maybe they need to stop hanging on to this franchise naming thing, so people will have different expectations with new games.
It’s different to play a game and think, ‘Hey, this is reminiscent of gameX’. Cool!
Rather than, ‘This crap is nothing like gameX’. It sucks!

Bioshock was just System Shock 2 with a new coat of paint and a Bioshock 2 was just Bioshock with a few new bells and whistles so I do not see where your argument is, slipoch…

Huh. I thought everyone loved Infinite? Haven’t played it yet myself…

I could never get into the aesthetic of the Bioshock games. It never drew me in, I guess I’m more System Shock 2/Deus Ex than Rapture or Infinite in the Aesthetics I like.

Gameplay wise I don’t think they ever really moved away from System Shock 2. Ah well.

Infinite was great it had great fast paced combat and the whole skyhook, well, hook was very well done. Elizabeth was an awesome example of great companion AI. The only bad thing about it was that it was really just another FPS in the end and one that was delayed over and over and over and wasn’t the second coming of gaming it was being made out to be.

System shock 2 had a great story and a true sense of creeping horror (for it’s time) bioshock had a story that was interesting but the gameplay was massively simplified down to shoot everything (cept little sisters).
Bioshock 2 was bioshock 1, main protagonist changed but illogically so (who ever heard of a prototype outperforming the final result?) everything else remained the same.

Bioshock infinite was different, they tried something a little wierd and I wish they had left everything in (3 factions instead of 2, the hanging scene, more story driven less shoot everyone) they originally had planned. in the end the story ended up in 1st year philosophy crap like most anime attempting meaning (read neon genesis here) but the ride was fun.

Thus no.2 was more a lack of effort than anything else, re-used assets and gameplay, story was lackluster and predictable (although so was the DLC for infinite)

slipoch,

From a story point I agree about 2, but gameplay wise I thought it was better than the first one. In Bioshock you didn’t even need guns, the wrench was enough for everything except two points :S

The wrench may have been all you needed, but why let that get in the way of experimenting with what’s on the table? The same holds true with many games.

System Shock, eh! – A hole in my gaming history… Maybe I’ll check it out some day.

c0mc0,

I prefer Infinite over Bioshock. Except for some low points the world was more believable. It was alive and felt like an actual place. A talking protagonist also helps a lot, silent protagonists only work in games like CoD where you literally don’t matter.
