Minecraft’s official hosted servers launch worldwide, starting at $13 a month

Mojang have announced that Minecraft Realms, their official Minecraft multiplayer server experience, is now available worldwide.

Starting at $13 AUD a month, Realms servers are fully whitelisted so you can explicitly control who gets in or out, and only the host needs to pay the subscription fee. There’s a limit of 10 players per server at any one time, although 20 people can be on the whitelist. Check out the Realms FAQ here for more details.

Currently only the PC/Mac versions of Minecraft are supported.

Notably, Minecraft Realms does not allow mods or texture packs — this is a straight-up, plain vanilla Minecraft experience. If you’d like to host a Minecraft server with mods and plugins, why not consider Gameservers.com? Thanks to iiNet’s partnership with them, you can get a lightning-fast, quota-free server right here in Australia on iiNet hardware. Get more details here.

Ouch, bit pricey.
Same for the gameservers.com ones.
Better off getting a static IP and doing it yourself, really.

tacitus42,

That’s the way to go, my mates and I when we do our holiday stints just use hamatchi and whatever plugin/ mod we want. Much cheaper and easier.

Minecraft has a lot of appeal to younger audiences/families/casuals, though, and that’s who this targets.

Also people with older hardware might not be able to host a server for 10 people and play at the same time.

I run a small modded vpn server runs FTB:monstor ok $25 ($15 for vpn + $10 for extra ram). you need to be a little linux proficient to get it going but does the job :D

Theres no money in people playing on already hosted servers.

That means it’s not out YET. You guys should probably edit that.
