EVE Online’s player monument immediately vandalised, this is why we can’t have nice things

EVE Online Monument

Literally a week after being unveiled, the EVE Online player monument in Iceland has been vandalised, with somebody using the EVE Fanfest event to post about it on Twitter as they singled out and defaced a particular name.

CCP have weighed in on the official forums, saying that “This is damage of public property in the City of Reykjavik. The police have been informed, and investigation is ongoing.”

“This is not a laughing matter, and will be dealt with as a criminal offence. We are currently reviewing security footage from a number of surrounding buildings.”

The reaction to the vandalising from the EVE community has been strong and vocal, with many calling the action “shameful” and “cowardly”. Famous EVE pranksters in the GoonSwarm also defaced the monument, but did so with an easily removable sticker, which is… nice?

Jerk move even if you don’t like the monument, or that specific character.

I have heard the scratched player was linked to pedophilia and such, nonetheless defacing a monument is still defacing a monument.

Doesn’t surprise me; lot of trolls on Eve who get off on destroying digital property. I fully expect that there will be more in the future.

What did goon do with the sticker? That sounds more interesting.

Wait is this an actual thing? I thought it was just something in the game.

exe3,

And exe just joins the party after the many months of hype :P.

Reading that just makes me want to support him even more…

I didn’t really care and didn’t think they’d actually put a monument up in the middle of nowhere over a bunch of people who play a game.
