CCP have finally taken off the veil on their astonishing statue to the EVE Online universe, not far from their head offices in Icelandic capital of Reykjavik. Named the EVE Universe Monument, the artistic monolith contains the names of primary characters made before the start of March this year with separate honours given to players who have passed away. A time capsule filled with video and written messages is also buried underneath the monument.
Sigurður Guðmundsson, the artist commissioned for the sculpture, named it Worlds Within a World. “It alludes to a meeting of two different spheres; my art, which contains my existential point of view, melding with the world of EVE, another reality. Those two worlds are then reflected in a highly polished steel mirror which, aside from reflecting them, simultaneously mirrors the larger world fostering the two worlds and the identities within, joining them into one,” he said.
A video of the unveiling has been uploaded to CCP’s Instagram account, complete with some polite jeers as staffers initially struggled to pull the black shadecloth off. I’m not in any position to really comment on the artistic qualities of the statue, but the EVE universe seems proud. So congratulations to CCP for embarking on an adventure of a very different kind.
