Watch Dogs reclassified as R18+ in Australia: higher violence, sex and drug use

Ubisoft’s delay on Watch Dogs has had an unexpected side effect: the company have used the extended time to re-submit the game to the Classification Board, and come away with an R18+ rating instead of MA15+.

The new rating has higher levels of sex, violence and drug use, and now carries the warning “references to sexual violence and sex scenes” rather than the original “strong themes and violence”.

You can find the new rating can be found here, and the old rating here.

We had a good time when we went hands-on with Watch Dogs recently. Read about that here!

Damn, I mean it looks like the story is head in the direction of human trafficking so I can see how this might get a bump in the ratings.

It’s as if a whole bunch of console kiddie voices cried out at once, and then were suddenly silenced…

Im happy with the R rating. Nearly 30 so i can still play it. However, my cat is still under 18 so he’ll have to stay outside when i play.

I’m wondering what “Version: MODIFIED” means. God forbid that means they have to fuck around with the game to get into Australia again…

As a courtesy, I’d like to see the Board communicate with the distributors of games banned before the R rating came through, letting them know they can resubmit.

Brilliant comment.

I don’t mind the rating however I still believe for the most part the R18 rating is a re-labelled MA15 rating.

Parents will buy it for their 12 year olds anyway, much like Grand Theft Auto. It may at least stop a few of them.

That’s all it really is, it has gotten a couple games through.
But games are still getting censored or RC’d seems more frequently the last 4 or 5 years too.

Sexual violence and drug use, and – assuming i’m understanding the news correctly – it merely got reclassified and nothing actually got cut? No imports/VPN’s/gifting required to play the proper version?
Huh. Ok. Cool I guess. Nothing to see here then.

Makes you wonder about some of the other recent double standard decisions, like a certain animated TV show which is aired here completely uncensored, yet when a similar scene from the show is depicted in game form it’s apparantly taboo… Our classification board be loco.

fuck me i hope they dont censor it

Well to be fair the lack of a R18 rating at the time meant games which should’ve been given an R18 rating were snuck in as MA15, so there’s some crossover between the two.

Also, going by this list (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_banned_video_games_in_Australia) no games were banned in 2010 and 2012. The most games banned was in 2009 with 6 games with 2004 following with 5 games. Certainly the figures to me don’t seem like more games are being banned. Though admittedly these figures don’t include censored games, the details of which aren’t always clear.

Hi, my name is InAUGral and I’m an ignoramus…

Was that really necessary? Seems like a completely valid comment to make.

Pinothy has trouble making a point without being all elitist about it

as long as they dont cut content or Australian Content modified

The MODIFIED tag means that the item in question has been modified from its initial submission. In this case, I’m assuming that the ACB just got a newer build of the game than the one they initially rated MA15+.

Will you come to the store with me when I get my copy so they know there’s an adult with me? :(
