We’ve been playing The Elder Scrolls Online for most of last week, and now — as the embargo drops — we’re here to give you our thoughts.

Check out the game in action below in our big ol’ preview video.

played for a few hours so far [game servers were up at 3am or earlier] and I’m not impressed.
So far it seems like standard generic MMORPG stuff with the exception that at least you have to manually aim.
The graphics are lack-lustre compared to skyrim.

I am not writing it off yet just that so far its nothing special.
maybe it’ll get better further in.

on the plus side I’ve not encountered any noticeable bugs.

It is.

It won’t.

Cmon people :) I’m all for lovers of MMO’s getting down and dirty with this but it won’t be particularly different to other games in the genre.

Looks very bland an boring to me sadly. No life in the world, an the standard “oh heres 3 npcs hanging out standing in 1 spot” type of deal. Not to mention the effects are……pathetically bad….

I am actually glad I saw this vid as I was going to buy it, wont be bothering now…

i can’t even get in at the moment :( will keep trying i guess

I am not that far in [just on the starting isle off of Skyrim coast.]
But I am so far liking it, but I am only playing because I want to see what the Cities and towns look like.

Also I have never played an MMO before apart from an hour of FFXIV so my opinion on what makes a good MMO or a fun one is completely irrelevant.

Eh, just as I thought then – a standard hotbar fantasy themed MMO set in the world of the elder scrolls. Real-time action based combat that requires positioning too, never a good thing for us with laggy non-Aussie servers…

Will give this a go a year or two from now when it inevitably goes F2P.

yeh, sorry guys, it looks dismal,

Is Bethesda Ok with this … I’m still very firmly under NDA :S.. Not that that stops me I just worry that you guys would get into a whole lot more trouble than me :S.

Anyways, the Audio is abit off in the video, being too quiet at times and too loud at others.

As for the game video really doesn’t do the world justice, I don’t know what it is but every time I see gameplay videos I cringe it looks better than video depicts it looks alot

A press embargo lifted at 2am Sydney time. Regular beta NDA is still in effect.

spooler,

Yeah, Mythor is correct about the press embargo. So don’t worry!

Also I totally agree, the game looks _really_ good in motion, the videos don’t do it justice.

Hmm, not overly impressed.
Especially for the $15/mth model, they may be in trouble.

Only played an hour or so so far and it looks like it would make a good F2P mmo… only it isn’t F2P

And who’s idea was it to replace the keybinding/quickslot system of pretty much every other TES game with the abomination it is in this one? Why must I wait until level 15 to be able to swap between my bow and sword quickly without digging through my bags?

Also, the game only gives the illusion of free aim with your bow. It auto targets a guy on mouseover and then when you fire, the arrow homes in on your target like they do in WoW. Noticed this when someone pulled a mob right as I shot an arrow at it.

Ahh fair enough, Bethesda are being so wierd about letting people talk about this :S.

Yea … I really have no idea what the hell they were thinking but doing the whole half assed lock on target thing … it was better when you could actually miss something you aimed at, I suppose it’s to address that though as alot of MMO players didn’t like it. It’s not too much of a problem but I wish they’d just go the whole way and replace the l targeting with traditional mmo locks but o well it’s not like it destroys the game or anything.

Played an hour’ish. So far, I had fun. I have only ever played a smidge of morrowwind, a bit of Oblivion and everything there is to do in skyrim… and to me it didnt feel that much different to any Elder Scrolls game.

I also have not played any MMO’s apart from KOTR (up to Tatooine) so my opinions on MMO’s probably have no base.

No bugs really so far, but also wouldnt say I would be rushing out to buy it so far.

phewcha: No bugs really so far

I’ve found alot of the same bugs from about a month ago … with abit more annoyance added, though the game does feel more responsive now.

Call me a cynic, but that itself is not great. This could turn out to be SWTOR all over again, or not..
Will have another look in a few months.

dajenko: SWTOR all over again, or not..

O no it totally will, this game will go free to play within a year because after a month it’ll lose 50% + of its database. Alot of us will buy it play it and enjoy it but it doesn’t have any staying power it’s very much a watered down skyrim.

Such an average game. Not bad and certainly not outstanding either. I was clicking through the voiceovers and blitzing straight at objective markers after only about an hour, I felt there was nothing there to actually get me engaged in it.

I am liking it more than expected. But I’m not an Elder Scrolls fan, I love MMOs, and I still prefer SWTOR & WildStar.

Fun for a change though, I’ll keep playing.

Thank you Tim
