SimCity mods now encouraged by Maxis, but the guidelines are still very restrictive

SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow

Cast your mind way back to October last year and you’ll remember that Maxis were preparing the path for modders to add and change content within SimCity. Now they are positively encouraging people to do so, but the guidelines they have set up significantly limit the potential mods will have.

As explained by PC Gamer, Maxis posted a blog post last week outlining the rules governing modding with regards to SimCity – and while they have a lot more legalese compared to the ‘first draft’ posted back in October, the content remains largely the same. Most notably, Maxis’ insistence players do not alter anything affecting multiplayer games remains.

Fortunately, Maxis noted in a recent forum post that they are still exploring an offline single player mode, which should open up the modding potential significantly if it comes into effect.

So restrictive there is no point to even bother making anything.

Fail.

Offline Mode confirmed

Offline mode is great, I hope someone mods bigger regions, thats all i want.

What’s to stop people releasing mods online that bypass Maxis’ rules? Or is there a ‘Steam Workshop’ type system in SimCity?

This is exactly what I was wondering.

CitiesXL isn’t that great. The regions are way too big. A nice medium between the two would be good and a shift from ‘making the most optimal region’ being the core gameplay to ‘expanding out into the whole region’ would also be good.

I think we will see something like the “nexus” vs “the steam workshop” happen with Simcity mods.

You get the mods that are supported officially and shown on their forums and then places like Simtropolis having all the popular mods that people actually want.

:)

Can we please have more than just PR for Maxis as they are not really allowing modding, they are allowing you to create free content in the way of pretty stuff and the likes for which they will own.

They are not allowing modding as in fixing issues with the game such as the town size “city” and other less than desirable game features.
