Hitman’s next instalment reportedly cancelled, Square Enix working on mobile Hitman instead

Hitman: Absolution

By on January 7, 2014 at 2:13 pm

It looks like Square Enix may have pulled the plug on the next Hitman game, with the LinkedIn profile of Richard Knight, a senior designer at the company, revealing that it was cancelled last year in 2013.

According to the LinkedIn profile of another Square Enix employee, network engineer Anthony Pressacco, the studio is now working on “an unannounced Hitman game” for Android and iOS.

The cancellation of the next Hitman game has not been formally announced, but then neither was it ever formally proclaimed to be in development — however, following last year’s “extraordinary loss”, the company vowed to refocus on smartphone and tablet gaming.

Yeah, because making bad games for mobiles will net them just as much money as bad games for console/pc.

And THIS is why the AAA industry needs to calm down… We’re losing previously good franchises and companies because no-one can make up the costs of development… Hitman was a good franchise, but Absolution went the wrong direction, so now all of a sudden the franchise isn’t worth the effort…

[UPDATE] Square Enix has issued the following statement to clarify today’s news about the cancelation of a Hitman game that was being developed at Square Enix Montreal:

“There’s a bit of confusion around the Hitman projects currently in development at Square Enix-owned studios and so we wanted to take the time to clarify what each studio is working on to clear up some of this confusion. Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise,” A Square Enix representative said. “We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year.”

Just bin the franchise … maybe it would have done well if the game was at all enjoyable … I loved the old school hitmans but considering how bad the last one was this news does not sadden me

remake the old hitman 1+2 into a new one.
plz square enix pleaaaaaaasssseeee

Hitman Absolution was perfectly fine. Do u really think youd play hitman 1 and 2 if they were remade as a HD collection? i doubt it… hitman 1 and 2 are fucking shit by todays standards. I tried to play the metal gear HD pack and was reminded why old games should stay in the past.

Looking forward to another Hitman, if they make one.

When you make a financial loss on a project that takes 3-5 years to make then yeah you tend to cut your losses. At least Squeenix are still continuing it anyway. Every single AAA game they came out with last year was a loss (Tomb Raider especially) so can you really blame them for doing the sensible thing?

sirgriggles,

Hitman 1 and 2 are pretty bad. I don’t know why people said absolution was a disgrace to the hitman games when 1 and 2 were like 90% poor stealth and 10% disguises anyway, at least now the gameplay is challenging.

According to this article Tombraider “still managed to outsell every previous entry in the series”. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/08/01/square-enix-confirms-next-generation-tomb-raider-sequel.aspx

That indicates to me that the problem isn’t necessarily that they’re running franchises into the ground, merely that they’re spending way too much money on development in the hopes of extraordinary sales. Not every franchise can sell like hotcakes every year ala Call of Duty.

It really wasn’t.
I did manage to finish it but it was a drag.
The first 2 in the series I’ve played maybe 4-5 times each.

Its like DA:O Vs the second one, I played the first through probably 10 times on different characters and paths, but I couldn’t even finish the second one.

Blood money was the perfect hitman game. if they made another one with that gameplay on an improved graphics engine…we all would have been happy. I still haven’t played absolution because ive heard so many bad things about it :(

^ This.

Don’t it’s horrible.

jez,

So you’re saying if they hadn’t spent as much on marketing and making the series more accessible they would’ve sold just as much and even broke-even?

Good to know that the 8m unit sales target they set was a pipe dream.

rapid101 that’s not quite right. It wasn’t that they made a loss, they didn’t make their excessive sales/profit targets for the year. They also stated they were addressing that in their statements last year.

Squeenix need to have some people who don’t run the games by committee and allow the devs the ability to do some more fantastic work like in Tomb Raider (minus the QTE’s!).

Hell if they did a remake of FF7 and FF10 with better voice acting and better gfx they would make millions off nostalgia. Oh and please fix Blitz Ball to be more comprehensive, was one of the most fun mini-games I’ve played in ages :D

That’s the spirit! If something doesn’t go to plan, just give the whole thing up! Good solid life advice.
