Star Wars: The Old Republic shows off starship PVP in new trailer

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Although this trailer doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know from the first announcement, it’s nevertheless another opportunity to watch spaceships fly around and explode each other with lasers, which is pretty much good entertainment at any time in my book.

SW:TOR‘s upcoming Galactic Starfighter expansion opens for early access on December 3rd, and features free-flying 12-v-12 space combat. Get more info here.

I do wonder how it’ll be with latency… If it’s anything like World of Warplanes it’ll be terribad.

artfuldodger,

Well, being that they took away the aussie servers, I imagine the latency will be shit house. (Yes I’m still bitter as hell about that.)

artfuldodger,

Latency is high, however it uses the same type of technology as RIFT to reduce the delay times.

Still waiting for a new X-Wing VS TIE Fighter, or X-Wing Alliance :D

+1

Damn I loved those games. Still remember puling an all nighter by accident when first playing Tie Fighter.

discolt,

They’d have my money so fast it wouldn’t be funny. My wallet wouldn’t even detect the movement.

I saw ‘Star Wars’ then ‘PVP ‘and thought “Awesome, some Battlefield: Star Wars news!” then I saw Old Republic… :(

Could you imagine the money they could be making out of the Star Wars IP if they put out some of the games that people are wanting.

Particularly Kotor 3 (or just any decent Star Wars RPG) and a new X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.

At least we are getting a new Battlefront.

SWTOR fills me with sadness. What a great game it could have been. I almost feel like they should just let it die so they don’t remind players of it any more.

On the other hand it’s probably the best free to play thing you can get right now even if you just do it for the single player.

Latency will be fine with the aussie server right? oh wait..

Yep if they actually made what the fans wanted, and did it properly, they’d be printing money.

I do miss the lower pings, but I’d take the current ping with the US population over the aussie servers 1-2 hour PvP queues and 4+ hour flashpoint queues anyday personally.

The US servers have more players online in thier off-peak than what we did even in our peak hours before the aussie servers were shut down. I really enjoy it a lot more being able to play the game I’m subbing for and find groups for whatever I want to do, whenever I want to do them.

Why does it fill you with sadness? When was the last time you played it? It’s actually a pretty good MMO now that they have added heaps of content (a lot more than most MMOs) and fixed most of the issues.

Yes, it could of been more (day/night cycle would of been great), but it isn’t the failure everyone makes it out to be either.

I keep going back to swtor after a few months and it makes me glad.

The Bioware guys are trying really hard and making a lot of improvements, its great to see these additions coming in, although a lot of people think its too late.

I have to admit tho, its a hell of a lot of fun if you havent given it a go and have a few mates who might be keen. very interactive.

Oh it’s not a failure, it sets an impossibly high bar for other MMOs to match. Playing Guild Wars 2 after it was rather shocking, you can’t get used to unvoiced NPCs and quests. SWTOR did so many things amazingly, particularly how invested I got in every single quest and NPC out there – somehow the voice acting just pulls you in, and further, there’s a morality type choice to be made at some point, so I found myself actually caring and paying attention to exactly WHY this guy needed that other guy killed.

It’s just that it’s extremely clear that the game wasn’t finished. Look at how amazing the first flashpoint (instance) was (on both factions) – fully voiced, with branching story, etc. I think they planned for all the flashpoints to be that good, but they only had the money and budget to do the first one. Imagine every single flashpoint being of that quality?

The first companion you had had her own story and missions. None of the other 4 did. It also looks like they clearly ran out of money and time to do them. You can even see where the mission placeholders are supposed to go! They would go… I need permission to do this huge thing, then you say I’ll help you, and they’ll be like.. no I got to do this on my own… the fade to black and then they walk back in and they’re all like “my personal story is all resolved thanks for the support”.

The engine itself was also a huge letdown. The outdoor PVP area would lag to hell with 20-30 people in the same screen, never mind the 50vs50 battles. Extremely poorly optimized, it had nothing to do with the graphics or power of the rig, it was all serverside lag. I loved the PVP part of it again, one of the best MMO PVP experiences I’ve had (yay for Huttball) me and my “premade” of 4 players could go 20 wins a row without a loss, but there wasn’t support for ranked play while I was active.

Everywhere you looked you could see flashes of brilliance, but the work was only 20% complete, and even then I thought it was already so much better than anything else out there. If they had spent another $100 million on it, this game would have killed WoW ten times over. As it is, they barely got to much more than a million subs when it deserved to have 10 million.

Won’t the next Battlefront game have ships shooting each other as well, only with extra FPS action thrown in (on the ground and in space) ?
Edit: Oh wait, this is an expansion for an existing game. An MMO, right?
Man I had not realised how long it has been since I dropped star wars games.

On X-Wing / TIE Fighter / X-Wing vs TIE FIGHTER – I’m really hoping that Disney pay attention to the success of Star Citizen and realise there’s a (surprisingly large) market for space sims today…They just need to stop making Star Wars games aimed at teenagers. The cashed-up thirty-somethings is where it’s at. ;)
