Blizzard rules out free-to-play World of Warcraft

While there have been hints in the past that Blizzard was considering such a move, a free-to-play version of World of Warcraft is not currently in the works, say the big blue giant.

Speaking at Blizzcon over the weekend, production director J Allen Brack said to Eurogamer that “We didn’t make the game to be free-to-play.”

“We would have to rework the game pretty significantly in order to make it free-to-play. It’s not something we’re currently considering.”

Blizzard’s Mike Morhaime also announced this week that World of Warcraft had dropped another 100,000 subscribers over the last three months, and was now down to 7.6 million.

World of Warcraft‘s latest expansion was revealed this weekend past — get all the info about Warlords of Draenor right here.

I don’t remember who it was that said within the next 12 months Blizzard would go free to play with WoW but I have the following to say to you … I TOLD YOU SO ! :D

I don’t think the people that say WoW should go F2P have any idea how popular it still is.

Why on earth would anybody assume it was going to go f2p when it still has a rather large active subscription base?

Why would they go F2P when theres millions of people paying for it as it stands now?

Thank god, now the people saying “herpderp it’s going f2p soon” can shut up finally.

Well of course they would rule it out. They’re still making millions every month. Anyone who says this will go F2P is an idiot.

While its probably not going F2p in the near future, saying it never will is pretty silly too.
How many MMOs say they are not ever going F2P? last one I recall is SWtOR …

trb,

Well the Blizzard guy didn’t say that either. He just said they’re currently not considering it. Which given the current numbers, would mean they probably wouldn’t be considering it for quite a while yet. Of course like all things anything is possible.

7 600 000 x $14.95 per month …

7 600 000 x $14.95 per month …

$113,620,000 ?

now take the server/developer/customer service costs out …

Surely you’re not going to say it costs hundreds of millions a month to keep WoW afloat are you? I’m no expert, but that seems a little bit of a stretch by any imagination.

At any rate the fact that they’re pulling in money and turning a nice profit still, otherwise they would’ve dropped WoW like a hot potato long ago. Here we are, though, with Blizzard still sticking to a payed subscription, millions of people still willing to pay and an expansion in development. I wouldn’t be expecting WoW to be going F2P any time soon.

Blizzard were bragging about how much they spend on server + customer service last year sometime, and it was only of the order of 1 million a month max (pretty sure it was a lot lower).

So they would still be making a profit with only 100k subs, so there’s no way they will go ftp for yonks

They’re also paying a massive team of developers… I think you’d be surprised as to how much it actually costs to keep everyone working on WoW.

as for going ftp, it depends … if this expansion doesn’t sell very well then well… you might see them make the move to ftp over the next expansion cycle… it’s definitely at-least 2 years away because being blizzard they’d want to do it right but I could see it happening.

Well go ahead and surprise us then. Apparently it’s a high enough figure to surprise us, I’d like to hear it too.
