65 million Steam accounts now registered worldwide, Valve reports 30% growth

Steamy Money

It’s been a big year for Valve and Steam, with the introduction of Steam Operating System, the confirmation of their hardware Steam Box testing program, their new Family Sharing system, the upgraded trading system, and, well, ever hear of a little thing called DotA 2? And that’s not even covering anywhere near all of it.

They’ve now announced that this big year has resulted in 30% growth for the company, with 65 million Steam accounts now registered, and reminding everyone that 2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the Steam service. Happy Birthday, Steam!

“As the platform grows, our job is to adapt to the changing needs of both the development and user communities,” said Gabe “Sparklebeard” Newell in a press release. “In the coming year, we plan to make perhaps our most significant collaborations with both communities through the Steam Dev Days and the Steam Machines beta.”

This year was the year that I moved back to PC gaming as my main gaming system, living in regional WA services like Steam (as well as GOG, Origin etc) who can provide all the games I want at anytime of the day or night for a reasonable price played just a big a role as graphics when I made the decision to go back to PC.

All hail the prophet GABEN and the glorious march of the pc gaming master race !

So where’s our thank you gift for being there since the beginning?? …just saying…

Not sure it counts as a press release if your company is proprietary…

Lol ever since Dota 2. Steam has just gone up.

Still origin had the largest growth. They went 20 million to 40 million in just under 3 months at one point. Middle of November to 1st feb this year.

They then sat around 50 million starting April for a while equaling steams numbers for a while.

Then Dota 2.

Steam had all these secret weapons to pull out when origin came around. Before origin came around properly 2 years ago steam had hardly any functionality. It was a store, forums and a launching pad for games. That’s it. Hen origin came around. Competition.

Competition is good.

Still I don’t have any loyalty to either. Which ever have games cheaper I will buy the game from. And yes. Sometimes origin is cheaper. Even without specials.

Though I’m in NZ. We don’t have a NZ steam so its all US prices. Still gotta pay tax as it comes from an NZ bank account. Origin does have an NZ version with NZ prices and the tax is included in the price. So origin can be cheaper.

When I can download Origin games quota free then maybe I’ll look at what they have to offer. Data is far too expensive in region 2 & 3 (rural and regional areas) in Aus for slightly cheaper Origin games to make a difference.

Isn’t this the amount of active (and regularly used) steam accounts? Not the amount of registered ones?

Edit: yeah it is. It’s the amount of people to log in within the last month.

Steam has SO many benefits, god I love Steam…

The thing I love most about Computers bar the work productivity or lack there of when using Steam at work :) ,… is going back in time to play the older games which do not play on modern systems until their converted/fixed to do so,… Steam/GOG ftw.
The likely fact that PC gaming will never die due to the likely hood of consoles not being able to play older or other systems games (without modding the system) I will be on PC a while I think.
Steam OS/Linux ftw

Plus the older you get….the more you want and can afford,…the more you put into your passions.

You’re doing it wrong ;)

Yep, google “the game you want” cd keys. Shop around, can be literally half the price of Origin or steam.

alternatively, use http://cdkeyprices.com/ n search for the cheapest cd key price from most online stores. ur welcome

Nice site, thanks.

Is it updated with special deals (like steam’s daily and flash sales) as well?
