Star Citizen fan offered official development gig after making “gorgeous” fan video

In a scenario that might technically be called “living the dream”, a YouTube who put together a Star Citizen video has been offered an official development position with the team after impressing the people at Roberts Space Industries.

The video, which you can see below, depicts the night shift on the deck of a Constellation vessel. After seeing it, Star Citizen‘s community manager Wingman gave a shout-out to its creator in a recent video.

“One person really stood out in that regard in the last week or two – it’s AnythingFPS on Youtube,” he said. “I highly recommend you check out his thing. He’s done this incredible walkthrough of the Constellation. He’s using all the animations, he’s putting all the people in there, cloning all of our characters and having them be part of the thing. It’s just absolutely beautiful.”

“We’ve actually reached out to AnythingFPS because we think his work is so good that we wouldn’t mind him working for us in a direct manner. So AnythingFPS, if you’re watching, you need to answer that HR email that I sent. Because we want you.”

Good times.

Old news, but its awesome they approached him for work.
He does some great stuff online

They post regularly on whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/user/103811

I don’t think the videos are that good/diverse (they’re all the same camera tracking + mellow soundtrack) enough to be something ‘official’ without some more depth to them but I’m happy for him.

Aaaaand this is how it starts, hiring from the fanbase is almost never a good idea. That’s one of the big screwups that Sigil made, they hired a bunch of longtime fans with little real development experience from one of their conventions… came back to bite them in the ass.

nekosan,

Hiring for things like community management and advertisement which I assume is what this kind of role is, is fine and pretty common place. Also Valve is pretty much build on mod teams atm. CS TF2 spring straight to mind.

Couldn’t disagree with this more. There are dozens and dozens of people who have made it through to Crytek directly via their modding community and have made it very high up in the ranks for some of the older guys (such as the senior lighting artist on the Crysis team and rendering programmers on Cinebox, etc).

Showing what you can do means far more than saying you can do it on paper and you have to have a starting point somewhere. You can’t gain experience in the industry without being in the industry and if you’ve got enough experience to grab attention of AAA developers then it’s probably about time you got officially into the industry.

It’s possible that it depends on a) how discriminant they are when hiring said fans and b) how they treat said fans when hired. If they’re cautious about the rolls they fill and then when the person is hired give mentoring and training to said fan, then it will always work out well. If they just randomly hire and assume the new member knows what they’re doing then yes, it will end badly.

Why did it just play it twice?

LENS FLARE FUCK YEAH IT WORKED FOR STARTREK………… TWICE.

I’m not gonna say no though. :P

They only want me to make videos using their assets. Theres nothing more than that, it cant really come back to bite them on the arse. I’m not creating assets, and im using the same things everyone else has access to ATM from the Hangar Module.

Anyways, still talking with Eric about a few things currently.
(Thats why i’ve stopped posting videos.)

pearl,

Well as long as you hold back on the “rule 34″ stuff, right? :P

Pearl = AnythingFPS? Freakin awesome! Homegrown winning :)

Star Citizen is a different kettle of fish. Chris Roberts has tight control over his game. Check the history of one of the original SC staffers – Ben Lesnick – you might be surprised.

And to the detractors here downplaying AnythingFPS videos put your money where your mouth is and develop your own SC content.
