Myst and Riven creators take to Kickstarter to launch spiritual successor Obduction

Obduction

Cyan, the creators of the iconic adventure games Myst and Riven, are building a spiritual sequel named Obduction and they’re asking for $1.1 million to make it happen.

The game, which will be built using the Unreal Engine 4, will “resurrect that incredible feeling of suddenly finding yourself in the middle of a new world to explore, discover, solve, and become part of,” according to Cyan.

$25 is the minimum level required to pledge for a copy of the game. Take a look at the trailer below and see what you think.

Cyan, not you too!!!!

Gosh I wish they’d go back to pre-rendered screens with green screen actors or the free-look pre rendered video tech, Myst V was awful and mostly due to the fact it shoved everything that’s Myst into a FPS engine and just accepted the limitations.

They’ve made really beautiful environments with pre-rendering but they can’t do that on the fly in a 3d engine since its so dependant on the user’s hardware :(

hmm, quite interested in this!
Myst 3 was my favourite of the bunch…and this article just reminded me that I purchased the Myst pack from GOG a while back but forgot to download any of the games…oops. (time to head over to GOG)

It doesn’t surprise me that they’ve already hit over 200k. Being free from publishers dictating how the game should be made will turn out interesting as we’ll see just how creative they can be.

I’m not fussed if they make it like URU. I think Cyan will come up with some quite beautiful environments using UE4. Add the fact that Oculus support is built into the engine it shall be quite an experience indeed.

Probably worth noting that Cyan did NOT make 3 or 4. They make Uru, but if it were left to Cyan it would not be playable today through bugs & server shutdowns, the gaming/modding community made Uru playable, free and even bigger than when it started.

Cyan made Myst, Riven, Uru and End of Ages (Myst 5). 50% success rate IMO.

They have made some great games, and some awful ones; hopefully Obduction will be better than Uru or 5.

I pledged $25.

hnnnnnnnggggg omg so freaking awesome. I have loved every single Myst game so imma throw so much money at this

EDIT: kinda disappointed that its not actually a new Myst game. I’ll still throw some money at it though
