More news — or possibly non-news, depending on how you look at it — around the upcoming DayZ Standalone, which some eagle-eyed people recently noticed popping up on the Steam Database.

In response, Dean Hall stepped forward to reiterate that “progress has been very good” and they were “a mix of nervous and excited”.

“And as I’d stated on my twitter when I announced my break from social media/updates, we are on the final lap. Part of the final process involves the actual administration of the release, which is actually surprisingly complex and time-consuming.”

“So, to confirm, there is no release date announcement and we’re 100 percent focused on getting the alpha out the door.”

“On 14 August 2012, Rocket announced that DayZ would become a standalone game…[and] had originally indicated the desire to see a release by the end of 2012.”

To be fair, Unknown Worlds put a “Fall 2009″ release date on Natural Selection 2 which ended up releasing in October 2012.

The original release date was from a time when the plan was to basically polish up the current mod and release it as a standalone. They have since had a rethink and went a lot more in depth with the changes so the original release date doesn’t mean much.

With that said having no current release date is also pissing people off, and personally the longer it takes the higher my expectations for the game become. So Rocket if you’re listing “if you can’t make it fast you better make it good (*shakes fist in the air threateningly)”.

Sure they also built an entirely new game engine from the ground up… Totally
the same thing as using an existing engine to create your project right ? :P

This I think is going to turn into a massive problem for Day Z originally they promised something that was a work in progress but would be out quickly. Now … I’m not really sure what they are aiming for and I don’t think I’m alone in that.
all this time they’ve taken and they haven’t moved to ARMA 3 … seems silly to me.

hopefully the gameplay is fantastic, arma 2 is looking very dated compared to 3 : /

Oh definitely, that’s exactly what I meant. How considerate of you to interpret what I said between-the-lines and reaffirm it. “:P”

… Any news on single player?

Rocket also said in december 2012 that “the server side MMO type architecture is in final testing” or some bullshit like that, he made it sound like they were done with the basic shit and could start developing content and player tools… months later statements made it seem like they had just started.

Pretty much any information they gave us before the second quarter of this year was just bullshit designed to keep us interested.

I’m interested to see how recent players of the game will react to the stand alone, I have friends who picked it up in the last few months and their idea of what the game is about is pretty at odds with the original ideas.

nastywetsmear,

Wait, were they discussing a single player campaign for this? I’d be so into this if they were.

No

Pretty sure the ship has sailed on this one, really not interested at all.

spooler,

Didn’t think so. Just thought I’d pipe up in case it were true.

Yea… if only I’d ;ove it aswell I tend to find “modern war pvp game with zombies” to be kind of “meh”

Yeah, I was asking more because I was hoping there would be, not because I had any info suggesting there was. :(

They reeeeally should have moved to A3 with this one. The lighting, rain and fog upgrades in A3 alone would improve the atmosphere of the game a thousand times over.

Not to mention the better animations which was a big bug bear for many people new to Arma after DayZs popularity.
