Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has up to 80 hours of single-player content

Ubisoft Montreal is pretty sure it’s going to deliver bang for your buck with Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Speaking to OPM, lead designer Jean-Sebastien Decant said it will take “20 hours to finish the main story, 50 or 60 hours open world stuff”.

“I wouldn’t be able to give you any numbers, but what I can tell you is we have three big cities, compared to the other games, there’s three huge cities and then fifteen unique locations – like continents – throughout the world, and then lots of [islands where] you can find buildings, stuff like that. The size of the map is like fifteen, twenty minutes, if you were just to sail without stopping, so that’s huge,” he added.

“We really tried to increase the feeling of adventure. At the same time it has to be easy to use so we added a number of teleports, in fact every [objective] you do becomes a teleport. So as you soon as you win somewhere, you can send people there.”

How much of that estimate is just from sailing in chunks of, say, 10 minutes to get from A to B, though? The cities definitely look fun, but is the rest of the open world gameplay captivating enough to make you want to sail around everywhere?

phylum,

I firmly believe that sailing a ship around and around is going to be fuckin’ awesome.

rfmachin,

Seconded.

rfmachin,

Russacky,

Oh god, I hope your both right. The naval battles in AC3 was the worst part of the game for me.

Congratulations! You’re monster.

So basically I’m really only interested in 20 hours of the game…

Naval combat looks fun, but sailing doesn’t. It would definitely break up a 10 minute journey, but it would probably also make everything take longer.

This is completely nitpicking, but I am getting completely sick of the main character always looking the same. Sure it might be what they have built their ip on, but god if im not over seeing it.

Marcus Dunn,

I agree. I’ve also had a problem from the get go concerning the assassin’s garb. In the first one it made sense cos there was the priests or whatever. In the current games it’s just “LOOK AT ME. I’M AN ASSASSIN!”

Up to 80 hours, AND NOT A MINUTE MORE

Russacky,

It didn’t even make sense in the first one, why would you give yourself a uniform as an assassin?

korten,

Long flowing robes were more common back then in AC1 and maybe people weren’t too smart to pick an Assassin among the crowd :) Though by AC3 and AC4 where shirts and trousers are the norm, Assassin robes do start looking silly :)

Is this eighty hours of unique content or just the same fifteen minutes of gameplay that the original games gave us?

80 hours of gameplay… 70 of those hours being hand-holding, “hidden under story and between cutscenes” bullshit, with the final 10 exploring the game world.

i never found assassins creed games having cut scenes that took up that much of the game time? :\

korbain,

Same here! AssCreed was mostly gameplay; unfortunately, it just happened to be the same gameplay copypasta…
