DayZ gets a new video blog to show off the alpha’s progress

As we learned last month the stand alone version of DayZ no longer has a release date , so what have Dean Hall and the rest of the development crew been up to while they wait on the updated network architecture? A heck of a lot it seems, judging by the developer diary Hall uploaded on the weekend.

The video goes through some of the things they’ve been doing, like tidying up the inventory and cleaning up animations – as well as the new item degradation system and its effect on the player ecosystem and the new AI system they have been developing for zombies. It’s well worth watching if you’re interested, so check it out below or on the official DayZ blog – although make sure you have a spare 20 minutes.

I hope a competent company makes a dayz clone at some point.

Not that I would recommend this game at all but is this what your after?

DayZ standalone needs to release this now not in another few months or years. I want this in my life.

robbo89,

There’s a lot on their way at the moment and if these guys keep pushing the Standalone date back, the other ones are going to be released first. Hell L4D3 seems more likely to pop up first than this. Pretty disappointing, at least they’re trying to do the right thing and have it done properly, but with so many competitors out there with some fantastic looking games (Dying Light for example), I can’t imagine DayZ is going to do well when it finally releases.

Stop linking people to that rubbish. Do not play Infestation/The War Z. Its the worst kind of trap. The type that’s buggy, almost unplayably so and full of hackers. I think its even free now, but do not play it.

Doesn’t look like that to me, looks more like they’re bumbling along with minimal staff and little to no oversight or proper management. I was pleased with the progress of the weapon mods etc shown in that video but GOD DAMN that inventory looks terrible… it looks like something from a Half-life mod in the early 2000′s, you know the type, the ones with no staff that never even got remotely finished.

I just don’t understand why it takes them so long to do everything, it’s like Bohemia just don’t see the potential there and have 3 guys working in a drafty basement sharing a single computer.

The zombie genre is done and dusted, it’s so far beyond saturated that it’s not even worth lamenting any more but somehow NOBODY had done one of these games right yet, everyone just continues to half ass it.

Maybe it’s time to give EA or someone who wants to make some money a turn at it.

i can see the feminazis having a big whinge about this video

Well aware of that. Thanks.

I want a game like this where the focus isn’t on PvP.

They really need to just port what the can to ARMA 3′s engine … it’ll solve so many problems :S

That would be a good idea though. And they need to save their good ideas for things like… ummm… holding a magazine in your hand?

robbo89,

yea give me some objectives that take an entire server to complete like restoring power to a town or establishing a supply line or something. You know a feature I’ll enjoy rather than one no one cares about :P

Nah you can’t have that. But you know what you can do? Handcuff someone! And they can struggle! Innovation come at me.

As someone who looked at the DayZ fad and said “nah, I’ll wait for standalone” this looks great, and I’m quite content to wait for it. And I’m someone who LOVES sandbox shoite like this.

kablekill: There is a game called Infestation: Survivor Stories….

I feel like there is a legitimate legal threat to you here for recommending this product. Expenses, time lost, mental and physical damages…

In more serious news, I’m with Spooler. Make the Zombies deadly so that gathering supplies is a risk. Make me gather items to build or support a position from a horde. Make me look for parts to repair a generator and make me be cautious of when I use it to stop hordes from being drawn to my location. Make me hunt in the wild for contamination free food. Make me get a radio to be aware when a large, moving horde might be on the way. Make me search for medical goods so that I don’t die of infection, flu or just starvation and dehydration due to the runs!… Make me gather books and games to keep myself from going insane on days I can’t leave my shelter. Make me seek out other survivors (prolly AI NPC’s, as players are almost always tossers just running around shooting wildly) to trade food, ammo, petrol and other things.

They’re changing dayz to world of warcraft: zombies

One thing I was impressed with from the video is that they actually got people to play the game and watched how the people used the interface, what did & didn’t work and what was frustrating (instead just expecting people to change for the interface). Seems developers are so concerned with adding gimmicks and making things look pretty nowadays that they forget to check if there is anything about their games that makes people want to pull their hair out.

With that said I do wish they would hurry the f**k up and finish.

Did you even read my hole comment clearly not. Bellow is included for you.

kablekill:”Not that I would recommend this game at all, but is this what your after?”

****, read you stupid idiot. I, in not way said pay for this game or “recommended” it to anyone, don’t put words in my mouth. FFS!

Thanks.

Telling someone that “it’s there” as if it’s a viable option in any way or form, when it has been reviled by the collective online gaming community, is endorsing it. EVEN IF you did say that it’s crap. If it’s crap, why link it?

Unless you’re doing them a favor by WARNING them about it…

schrapple: eems developers are so concerned with adding gimmicks

I know pointless things like let’s say … opening a can with a bayonet.

Also the warz/survivor stories hate, I had fun with this game, having said that it hasn’t lived up to any of its promises and will have you bored in a couple of hours unless you band together with friends and get drunk while playing.

kablekill: Well aware of that. Thanks.

I’m well aware that you were well aware :D

spooler,

Don’t know, I haven’t seen the finished product yet so it’s hard to tell if being able to open a can with a bayonet is a gimmick or not. Being somewhat of a survival simulation there is no doubt a long list of things that seem mundane but are actually key to the experience, day-z is a bit funny like that.
