Thief launches on everything next February

Thief

It has been a while since we last heard anything from Eidos Montreal about Thief, which – depending on what you think of what we’ve seen so far – could be either a good or a bad thing. Things are different now however, as Thief‘s release date has been announced – and in Australia we can expect to see Garrett in action on February 28th.

Thief will be released simultaneously on all systems – PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One according to the official site (courtesy of Cinema Blend) and as Tim noted in June it bears more than a little resemblance to Dishonored.

The latest trailer for Thief explores The City’s factions – not the Hammerites and Machinists this time, but a lower class uprising against the corrupt elite. How Garrett plays into it we can’t be certain, but I’m sure we can all make some educated guesses.

But does it bear resemblance to Dishonored in a way that Dishonored didn’t bear resemblance to the earlier Thief games?

storm84,

Que? I think Dishonored had the soul of Thief in it and I could see it being considered an updated version of Thief for this generation, but apart from the basic elements it was pretty different to the Thief games. Is that what you were saying? im so confused anymore

Liam Gilroy: I think Dishonored had the soul of Thief in it

Exactly. It would be like saying Diablo III bears resemblance to Torchlight. That Torchlight is a massive Diablo clone makes the comparison seem a little silly. Just like saying Thief looks like Dishonored – of course it does because Dishonored was just Thief with slightly less thieving.

Everything I’m hearing about this game sounds really awful, it doesn’t sound like a worthy sequel in the slightest (doesn’t even sound like a sequel anyway, honestly).

Mechanists*

I’m still pensively hopeful. After all, the OMGZ THIS GAME ISNT THEEEIF AT ALLZ!!!!!!!!!! THEY RAEPED MY FAVOURITE FRANCHISE!!!! surrounding Thief 3 for the year before it was launched was much worse than this time around.

I just don’t understand how the studio could have lost its way so badly after DXHR. Thief should be easier to remake, I would’ve thought, as the mechanics are more focussed.

+1

So far from what I’ve gathered;
– The game features a young, brash, *Ninja* who coincidentally happens to be named Garret (Except he’s not – because its not Stephen Russel Despite Stephen voicing other npcs in the game so the issue of securing his talent isn’t in question…-_-)
– This fake Garret wasn’t raised and taught by the keepers – because they apparently don’t exist.
– Furthermore iconic and lore heavy factions and characters such as the Hammerites, Pagans, Mechanists, the trickster, supernatural adversaries (Zombies/Burricks..) apparently no longer exist either.
– Latest gameplay footage showcased exp gain Deus ex:HR Style and the player gaining said xp for headshotting a guard with his bow….

I just don’t understand why they would call this one Thief when I’m not seeing any similarities from the franchise apart from the main character’s name and the fact that you will presumably be stealing things.
Could have named it anything else and I would be happy TBH. Why retcon years and 3 games worth of existing lore and established story..? Why piss all over the existing fan base in order to appeal to the youth of today who contributed nothing to the franchise’s success decades ago?
