Saints Row producer criticises THQ for marketing game with “emphasis on porn stars”

Sasha Grey in Saints Row 3

It seems like all may not have been well under the surface between Saints Row developers Volition and their former masters at THQ. Volition associate producer Kate Nelson has used an interview with EDGE to criticise the way THQ’s marketing focused on porn stars rather than the actual work that Volition was doing to make their game as inclusive as possible.

“I did not always love how much THQ put an emphasis on porn stars,” said Nelson. “In Saints Row 2 and Saints Row 3 there was an emphasis on the penthouse girls, and earlier Tera Patrick.”

“I think it’s important in marketing games to make sure that the essence of the game is what’s being marketed, and I think the porn star angle didn’t really fit in with what Saints Row is at heart, which is a parody. We like to poke fun.”

Nelson also said that some Volition staff “didn’t appreciate” THQ’s marketing message that porn star Tera Patrick was involved as “special producer” in the development.

“Saying that someone who had no industry experience was in a role that is sexualised as a producer of our project, or saying the penthouse girls are our QA staff, I just… I can see the humour in that angle of promotion but for me that’s the line where it gets into reality.”

I’ve thought that there is great potential for Saint’s Row to really satirise sexuality in American and Western culture generally. I get that the feeling that developers also felt that way as well.

I’ve only really played 3, but it feels like a game that is making fun of the majority of its player base.

So that’s why virtually every press shot for Saints Row IV has a woman with large breasts posing sexily with guns? Because they hate that stuff?

caitsith01,

As the producer is trying to say… they disagree with the way the marketing for the game was handled…

If you read the article he seems to be whinging about the marketing for SR 2 and 3 and suggesting that SR 4 is somehow better.

Do an image search with Safesearch settings off – at work (for maximum effect). :P

I had absolutely no idea that pornstars were every associated with these games after playing both. Certainly shows that it was BS developed solely by marketing people, and had nothing to do with the games.

^ this.

I wonder if it worked.

Was anybody aware that Sasha Grey was in Saints Row 3? She’s a pretty big name in the porn business as she’s broken out into a few mainstream roles as well.

I think there’s probably a lot of overlap between people who really get a kick out of Saints Row, and people who enjoy watching porn. It’s one of those things that isn’t talked about in respectable company, so it’s harder to judge how effective the marketing was, but I don’t think the association did them any harm.

It also makes Saints Row edgier, which is the angle the franchise was pushing. I think having porn stars in the previous games just makes sense from a marketing perspective. It certainly didn’t do the games any harm. Saints Row 3 was one of the only profitable things THQ had going for them when they went under.

Oh, Hulk Hogan was in there too!

caitsith01,

because its being marketed by deep silver not THQ

Which is not necessarily an upgrade in Marketing quality, anyone remember the Dead Island fiasco…

this franchise is a joke and THQ knew this, get over it Kate

We get it, you don’t like the SR franchise, You stated that in every single SR related topic.

He’s right though, the franchise is a joke…. literally one big joke from end to end and it’s a thoroughly enjoyable one :D

caitsith01,

Its possible she is talking about the TV ads in the US, rather than the internet stuff we are seeing.
