Rumour: Region coding in Saint’s Row 4 may mean copies bought outside Australia will revert to censored edition

Australians are a clever bunch. You tell us we’re getting a censored version of the game? We’ll find a way to circumvent it. At the moment, the standard trick is to get someone living outside Australia to buy a non-censored version of the game and gift it to your Australian Steam account. Unbox your gift and, voila! Uncensored copy!

There is a rumour circulating, however, that Steam is cracking down on this practice. Or at the very least, you may not be able to try it for Saint’s Row IV. It seems there may be region coding involved that will revert your copy to the Australian version if you play it in Australia, no matter which version you buy.

The original poster on the Steam forum thread discussing the issue received this from Steam customer support:

“The version of Saints Row IV that you will be receiving will depend on where you are physically located. If you gift the game to another country that does not have a Low Violence restriction, that user will receive a ROW version of the game.”

It doesn’t say specifically that your copy will revert to an uncensored version in Australia, but saying that the reverse will happen does imply something of the sort.

I want to emphasise again that this is all speculation and rumour, and we have reached out to Deep Silver for clarification. The forum posters who have been emailing for clarification for days, though, are yet to hear anything from either Deep Silver or Steam.

That’s a interesting turn of events.

Yeah…. I’ll let you guys know when I get my WW key and activate it.
Would be pretty sucky if true… but I have to say I personally don’t believe it.

Shhhh, DON’T clarify!

Surprising to see Valve get involved in this given how most of us in Australia ran an overseas or ‘fixed’ copy of L4D2 to enable gore. I think that largely got by because the media didn’t pick it up, only gamers and we weren’t letting on.

Just let it slide.. most likely Valve are just taking steps to demonstrate they had considered it in-case someone tries to hold them accountable for the practice, but if it’s investigated and made a thing then they’ll have to enact it as they’ll have no excuse to say ‘they weren’t aware’ when it’s a very publicly reported thing.

Or am I just being a bit tard-like?

It’ll be just as easy to get around as L4D2 was.

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I told you it would happen! :P

I can imagine this going horribly wrong. It’ll be interesting to see if they can pull it off.

:sadpanda:

Will be interesting to see what happens with the key I get from Amazon (given it’ll be sent out 2 or 3 days before release here).

If true, either Valve has taken it upon themselves to stop this, a way in future to stop circumvention of region pricing, or it has been coded directly into the game and it has a its own location check, which makes it nothing to do with Valve really.

Interesting if true.

PalZer0,

Yeah see that’s the thing, the wording of the email (and subsequent method of acquisition in this article) are referring to activating gifted copies from overseas… I don’t even know if it’s technologically viable or possible for Steam to chew up a key we input from a key site and convert it to a different string of numbers to be recognized as an AU version.

As an amendment to my previous post, maayyybeee gifted copies will be affected, but I can’t see this working on Steam keys.

of coarse deep silver are not gonna say anything. They want people to buy the game before hand. I will just play it on a VPN but I will wait till we find out if this is gonna happen first. If they have managed to stop the vpn thing I just wont buy it, or ill get a “different” version…

I think its a little sad an pathetic how much Aussies allow the gov to control what we as adults can an cant see in gaming.

jagji,

I don’t remember you saying that… Well shows how much attention I show to you.

deathmist,

I can’t be bothered looking for where I said it. Was in one of the SR4 news things some where.

So what have you personally done about how much the government controls your entertainment… I mean.. besides being a forum tough-guy?

I’ve already accepted my gift on steam and it was listed as the ROW version.
I find it hard to believe that they will swap a game someone already owns with another game after money has already changed hands.

In before there is a simple work around (outside of direct piracy).

I assume there has still been no word of things like this in regard to console copies. There are really two ways this will turn out, and I can’t see either being pretty for all parties involved.

Yeah, you never said this. You had plenty of Saints Row hate and slander, and put up a strong, if not biased campaign against it, but I don’t recall you claiming they’d circumvent online/non-au copies, especially through Valve/Steam. Do hold onto it though; you made it quite evident from your other posts that you don’t like being wrong.

WTF? Where did I say I don’t like it? Show me where I explicitly said I don’t like it? I LOVE IT I have SW4 pre-ordered, I had SR3 pre-ordered.

I payed for SW2 TWICE so I could play it. Don’t tell me I hate when you have NO clue why I said what I said when I said it. THIS is why you lot don’t under stand SHIT.

You have no concept of being able to see things from different points of view. NONE.

All you do is go ‘HAA, HE HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION, THERE FOR HE MUST BE AGAINST IT!’ FFS….. GET A FUCKING CLUE.

And I DID say it. was in comments some where, NOT in the CSB.

Hell, hear is the bloody quote:

jagji:
Um… as this is a Steam Locked game, I am pretty sure it wont matter where you get it from, it will still get censored due to the way reging works on Steam. At least, that’s what happens in Germany.

Pathetic article GoN, pure click-bait. They said if you receive the game as a gift from the US, for example, it will be uncensored. This is how it has always worked. Nowhere does it even IMPLY that they will censor it if you live in Australia. Please remove this article, you’re just trying to get free hits.

Except that isn’t what Deep Silver seem to be saying now? Did you read the comments here?

You know, this one:

midspace:
There were also these responses from DeepSilver/Volition support regarding the region protection.
