Proving once again why modders are awesome.

So here’s something you don’t see every day. In 2011 a dedicated Age of Empires 2 fan began working on a mod for the decade old game. Titled Forgotten Empires, it added five new civilizations, 30 new technologies and a slew of additional benefits and bug fixes to the still respectably popular game. And in the next few months, as spotted by PC Gamer, the Forgotten Empires mod will be released as an official expansion for Age of Empires 2 HD, the updated version of AoE2 released this year.
The Forgotten Empires expansion is being developed by the mod team in conjunction with SkyBox Labs, and along with the added benefits already built into the mod, the expansion will add four new campaigns, new maps, Steam Workshop and Trading Card support and Twitch.tv streaming integration. You can read more about the upcoming expansion via a Steam community post, and you can learn more about the Forgotten Empires mod via the official mod site.
