Learn how to fly the helicopters of ArmA 3 and not get all of your friends killed

ArmA III

By on August 7, 2013 at 11:06 am

Bohemia’s series of community guide videos for ArmA 3 continues, with a new episode from Andrew Gluck/Dslyecxi of the ShackTactical community that explains how to get your helicopter on, in excruciating and helpful detail.

Being a good pilot is important, so pay attention! There will be a quiz (not really, but your teammates will be mad at you).

Pretty easy to chuck a Heli in to the editor and practice. The realism is a little bit dumbed down from something like ‘Take on Helicopters’ but the basic dynamics and feel are there.

All I suggest is a LOT of practice at ground level, set up an obsticle course. Take off and landing in a specific spot, figure 8′s, moving side to side, forward and back. There is even a couple of open shed’s at the airfield I practice threading the AH-9 through. Head tracking really helps as well, if you have it.

I am still trying the master the A-Team’s low flying helicopter roll.

When it comes to killing friends with a helicopter, I cannot go past one incident in ArmA 2, when a group of us were on a hillside being harassed by an enemy (AI) helo. A friend managed to damage it sufficiently to force it down, and it proceeded to crash-land – on my face!

My friend had the temerity to then take a screenshot of the incident. He was very proud.

Nice video (as expected from Dyslexi). It’s a pitty though, that he forgot to mention one of the most important things to keeping your passengers alive.:

Beeing able to read maps properly and planning a good approach route often matters more than sheer piloting skills.

many arma 1 players died on the gon servers from transport helo pilots switching to map view while flying only to find it lag a bit for 10 seconds or so before it could switch back to flying, in the mean time the helo hits the ground :)

BIS say they finally fixed that receiving screen you get when you un-map finally.
