Guardians of Middle Earth MOBA finally coming to PC at end of month

Monolith’s Tolkien-tastic MOBA The Guardians of Middle Earth has finally been announced for PC, after launching on consoles at the end of 2012.

Bizarrely, GoME will not be free-to-play: the base game will set you back $19.99 USD on Steam, or you can buy the ‘Mithril Edition’ for $79.99. The difference is in how many playable ‘Guardians’ are included, with the ‘Mithril Edition’ including them all but the base pack only featuring Gandalf, Galadriel, Thráin, Gollum, Hildifons and Legolas. Still, with both DotA 2 and League of Legends currently being free to play, it’s hard to imagine this will really draw any players away.

In a neat twist though, Warner Bros. are giving players who already own the game on console a free Steam key to enjoy it on PC as well. If that’s you, hit up the official website here and click on ‘Console Owners Steam Redemption’.

GoME arrives on PC August 30.

this is a joke, an insult and a disgrace, how can they even compare this game to Dota2 or LOL, Dota2 looks gorgeous and its FREE to PLAY

Paying for characters where Dota is free? Base game costs $20?

Yeah, nah.

I think they have just greatly overestimated the draw that the LOTR title will have on the MOBA playing crowd.

It is a great shame. I read a little about it the other day and it sounded pretty decent (OMG NO LAST-HITTING I’M ECSTATIC!!!!!) but they’ve shot themselves in the foot by not only charging for the game but for also grossly overcharging for the game.

The fact is WB that LoL and Dota 2 have set the standard, you can’t charge for this genre and you’re only asking for failure if you try. This genre needs a player population more than most and you’re not going to get that population if you’re not letting people freely join to try it out.

There’s also the side issue of how well the game will be ported given it’s a console port. If it’s a poor port then it’s going to suffer that much more given all the other MOBA’s are PC only and thus are designed properly for PC.

They’re really shooting themselves in the foot aren’t they.

The sad thing is, $80 is a splash in the pond on what i’ve spent in LoL in the last 3 years. BUT I’M AN IDIOT! I betcha they’ll do a free deal in 6-12 months time if it hasn’t died by then. Also Art, so much Gary Busey….

I haven’t spent a cent on LoL personally though I did get RP once as a promotion for never being banned, again as compensation for when there were some huge server issues and then again as a gift from someone. Too bad there’s no skins I want for the characters I play. :(
