Dead Island to become a free-to-play MOBA of sorts (or something)

Dead Island: Epidemic

By on August 9, 2013 at 7:13 pm

It’s all very unclear, but what we do know is this: something called Dead Island: Epidemic is in the works at Techland, and it’s a zombie-MOBA. They’re shortening that to a “ZOMBA”, because it’s nice to have a cute acronym, but it doesn’t seem like it’s going to play out like the ‘traditional’ DOTA-style MOBA.

The game will be free-to-play and feature three teams trying to survive against zombies, while featuring “feature all the trademark elements that are part of a Dead Island experience”. So, zombies, then. And weapons that fall apart after one to three hits.

More details (or, indeed, any details) are set to be revealed at this year’s Gamescom, so stay tuned later in the month if this sounds like your sort of thing.

Techland are quite busy at the moment, pumping out not only this but also the demon-stomping Hellraid and other zombie-parkour title Dying Light.

Sounds like a new dance/exercise craze! :P

This has to be the most ridiculous thing I have heard in gaming. How these guys haven’t gone bankrupt is beyond me … Dead island was soooo bad.

There are too many MOBA’s as it is, this is not wanted, nor needed…

. . .

reads article………

goes back to playing DOTA 2

theblah,

Goes back to play LoL

Maybe they can make a really stunning, amazing CGI movie trailer that’s full of emotional story telling, promising details and beautiful images that has nothing at all to do with the game or the gameplay that makes people really interested and then throws them a wild curve ball by making them pay for a program that is utterly unrelated?

… Naw. They wouldn’t do anything so underhanded.

has nobody asked them, “why?”

Oh look a Dead Island related article, quick lets all jump aboard the hate bandwagon on a game that admittedly isn’t going to win any GOTY’s – but certainly wasn’t ‘bad’.
Have the author of the article passively aggressively dis the game too with over exaggerations of weapon durability mechanics for bonus points.

Ready? GO!

Guess I’ll break the mold and say, sounds ‘interesting’.

Beat me to it Stoibs, this actually sounds quite interesting. In my head I’m just picturing LoL/DOTA 2 skinned to an undead theme, but since they say it’s not going to following “traditional” DOTA-style mobas, I guess that’s far from it. Either way, I’m keeping an eye out on this, I spent hours in Dead Rising on co-op, didn’t get into Riptide since apparently it’s exactly the same as the first, but I don’t think there’s such a thing as too much zombie co-op madness.

stoibs,

where was it not bad ?
It sucked in, voice acting, gameplay, level design.
Actually it’s hard to find an area it didn’t suck in.

I love it when people think their opinion has become fact…

mearehear,

When someone expresses an opinion about something subjective like games or movies or whatever, they don’t have to say it’s their opinion – that’s implicit. The ONLY people I’ve noticed who feel the pick on those who don’t preface their opinion as an opinion… are those who don’t like the fact people don’t like what they like. :)

sounds interesting and if it is free i may give it a go

It was enormous co-op fun, in a B-grade kind of way. Not liking Dead Island would be like not liking the movie Braindead.

I’m gonna go ahead and guess that you don’t like Braindead.

I thought Braindead was hilarious, but I thought Dead Island was a massive let down. Is there some medication I can take to even me out? I’ve been self medicating with beer for a while now…

“one to three hits”

I see what you did there :P
