ArmA 3 campaign will not be included at launch; will trickle out later for free

Arma III

Bohemia send word that the upcoming launch of ArmA 3 will be a multiplayer launch only, with the campaign delayed due to polish concerns.

The campaign will release in three parts as free DLC for the game, with the first part ‘Survive’ made available within one month. Parts two and three, ‘Adapt’ and ‘Win’, will release later.

“This was not a decision we made lightly,” says Joris-Jan van ‘t Land, Project Lead on ArmA 3.

“As game creators, we love developing and playing through campaigns so, to those awaiting ours, we say: sorry for the delay. After talking a lot about a focus on quality over the last year, it simply did not feel right to compromise now. Rather than pushing back the entire game, we launch this year with an awesome package – a splendid kick off for the ArmA 3 experience.”

You can get more information at the official site. A specific release date for ArmA 3 has not yet been announced but it is expected in the third quarter of the year.

What’s so concerning about the Polish?

No one gets Arma for the campaign anyways.

pretty much this

ive palyed all the arma’s and they were my main game for nearly a decade and i never once played the campaigns on any of them.

multi player, single missions and editor are where its at, and downloading other missions ppl have made.

Apparantly people were raging on the BIS facebook page about this today. The way I see it, is that we can get the main portion of the game that majority of the people buy it for, ASAP, the other option, would be that we stay stuck on stratis (beta) for another 6 months while they polish the campaign and then release the full game. Considering they’ve never dropped an official release date for this game, I don’t think anyone has the right to complain.

Go BIS! Legends.

The only campaign I played was the op flash one and resistance and that was because I had no internet. MP with community made co-op and pvp missions is where ARMA shines, not a single player campaign with AI that need to have their hand held to get in a vehicle. I’m glad that they are focussing on what matters cause it seems like they have set themselves a very tight deadline for Q3.

I love the campaigns! But, after Jay Crowe responded to me on Twitter I read their FAQ and have to agree… this is what more developers should do.

My main objection was calling it ‘free DLC’ when to me it’s the core content I paid for… but they’re simply trying to assure people that they’re not charging extra for the SP component.

Can’t wait to view the full map!

blah, everyone will be happy with MP anyway! Anyone thats never got into the MP side of arma now sort of has no choice on launch which is good, because its awsome fun when you work it all out :D

Cannot wait for this! some of the test vids i’ve seen on youtube are incredible

I must be the only one swimming against the stream and feeling a little disappointed then. No, not raging and angry at Bohemia disappointed, but as a solo gamer I was starting to get a little keen on this after playing the alpha a little. I guess I can just wait until the campaign is released and get it then, plenty of other single player experiences to keep me busy until then I guess. (still have to play through previous ARMA experiences)

vcatkiller,

I’m sure they will maintain the ability to play singleplayer missions and scenarios, so you could still play the game with user made content anyway.

I’d just like developers to release games that are finished, I don’t like the current trend of selling the playable game that’s still under development as “Alpha build”.

A company like Bohemia shouldnt need to be scratching for money like that, maybe i need to just NOT buy/play until release so i dont get sick of games being unfinished piles of crap.

Well its free and its content you download.

What else are they gonna call it?

Saying “free DLC” just assures people that they don’t have to pay for the campaign when it comes along.

I’m not sure if you played Flashpoint or Arma 2 on release but…. the campaigns where basically unplayable. Script triggers wouldn’t fire or AI wouldn’t advance, and it just made you think “fuck it”. They then fix it (presumably) but so many people have already been turned off it. They really need to get past releasing like that but as a business it probably doesn’t make much sense to delay when they are sitting on a working game where it matters to most (editor / MP).

To me Arma 3 Beta already feels a heap less buggy than Arma 2 release did.
