SimCity creative director Ocean Quigley quits Maxis following “blundered launch”

Former SimCity creative director and front-runner for “most awesome name in game development” Ocean Quigley has quit Maxis after the poor launch of SimCity.

“I was dismayed at the blundered launch of something that I had poured so much love and attention into,” said Quigley to Polygon.

“Which made the leaving easier, but it would have probably happened anyway.”

However, Quigley added that even a successful launch wouldn’t have been enough to keep him around, having already spent years of his life on SimCity games.

“Honestly I think I would have left regardless of whether EA’s launch of SimCity was smooth or rough,” he added. “It was basically my third SimCity. I did SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 and this new SimCity.”

Quigley and several other SimCity developers have now formed a new studio and are at work on a new project, an iPad simulation game that recreates the formation of the earth.

games.on.net wishes Quigley and his magnificent moustache the best of luck.

For real. You could almost forgive those guys for Sim City if they all had similar facial hair. Makes them seem more like clowns than idiots… And everyone loves a clown! :D

That’s pretty damning evidence that not even the people who made simcity think it is any good. I wonder how the EA fanbois are going to see this one through their rose coloured glasses?

This guy should go an kickstart a “proper” Sim City game.

In the past few months there’s been a few competitors to SimCity popup, I noticed even a few indie games doing really well. I couldn’t agree with this more, if this guy decided to go indie it’d be a huge benefit for everyone.

I think too many people are reading too much into what’s been said. He ISN’T saying the game is crap, he’s saying the “launch” was crap.

He obviously believes in his work, it’s just time to move on to something else.

Some people have blinders on when they talk about this game.

Talk about denial. Yes the launch was bad, but it was the game that made the launch bad. Always on-line and broken region play mechanics made the launch bad. Then add city plots smaller than my suburb, limited road and transport options, terrible pathfinding, and sim/agent behaviour that did not perform as advertised.

The Sim City reboot was a huge step backward with two exceptions: curved roads, and the removal of power and water networks.

Wait for it, wait for it….

I feel a rabid in the force…
