Shadowrun Returns launches today, available on Steam now

Shadowrun Returns

Backers of Shadowrun Returns should have seen their Steam keys unlock overnight, leaving the game available to play.

Having scored $1.8 million from a Kickstarter drive at the end of April last year, Harebrained Schemes have delivered to a mostly positive reception, with positive feedback from Shadowrun fans and critics alike. We’ll have our review up for you soon.

You can buy the game for yourself now on Steam: there’s a standard edition for $20 ($5 more than the Kickstarter backers paid) and a deluxe edition for $34. The deluxe edition comes with a soundtrack and a PDF anthology of short stories and concept art.

Shadowrun Returns also features a level editor, allowing you to create stories and campaigns and share them through the Steam Workshop, which is always good.

Well, now I’m interested.

I can’t wait to get the DRM free version of this.

I really wish some sort of proper save system is patched/modded in at some point.
Also don’t forget to login to the harebrained schemes account page for your kickstarter exclusive bonus content key. (At certain levels)

Now I have the dilema tonight of choosing between this and The Payday 2 Beta that I just got off a mate…Gah!

can we get someone to do a community review ? :D or can someone point me towards a decent review or let’s play of shadow run ?

spooler,

Total Biscuit did a 40 minute video last night.

Types the guy on a forum :P

ottomatic: Types the guy on a forum :P

Eh, to each there own. Some people just don’t like reading. :)

Personally, as a long time fan of games like Fallout/Baldur’s gate/Planescape I’ll look forward to people actually calling my character by name again rather than the one-size-fits-all abitrary title that can be voiced in today’s Rpg’s like “The Dragonborn” or “The Courier”, “Vault Dweller”, “Grey Warden” etc..

ottomatic: Types the guy on a forum :P

I mean in games silly. I like to be able to sit back and generally not have to think much when gaming :P

Then why are you even interested in a TB RPG?! seems like a really dumb criticism to make. If you’re not thinking then you’re not doing it right. I think you’ll find Angry Birds more to your liking..

gammad: seems like a really dumb criticism to make

not as stupid as making the assumption that it’s a criticism, because it’s not it is however my preference.

and really angry birds is what you’re going with ? that’s way more thought provoking than say battlefield/CoD/the FPS genre

spooler,

My claim was that you’re some kind of shallow casual. Given your defense of Angry Birds, I’d say I struck a nerve. In this case, why do you even care about this game anyway? most people would’ve just moved along and not bothered posting. And as for reading you seem to be doing a lot of it at the moment. I just think all of your excuses are pretty laughable and evident of how shallow the market has become.

I never took them as criticisms of the game, I took them as a pretty bad attitude on your behalf to play something new and different.. why the hell do you think people kickstarted this thing! Give the game a chance, you might like it.

gammad,

I like cyberpunk it’s my favorite genre, that and I enjoyed the tabletop.

And we’re all casual gamers it’s not like i do it professionally :S I’m not really sure how pointing out that angry birds requires more thought than say … all the FPS genre is showing you’ve “struck a nerve”.
Isn’t this kind of a casual game ? I mean it’s not exactly competitive ? I dunno I’ve never understood the “lulz cazualz” thing.

gammad: I never took them as criticisms of the game, I took them as a pretty bad attitude on your behalf to play something new and different.. why the hell do you think people kickstarted this thing! Give the game a chance, you might like it.

I’m not allowed to have a preference for voice acting ? I might like it you’re right, I will give it a chance but i’m not likely to spend as much time as i would on it as if it had voice acting it’s a media preference thing.

spooler: I’m not really sure how pointing out that angry birds requires more thought than say … all the FPS genre is showing you’ve “struck a nerve”.

You’re still here aren’t you? reading.. you know that thing you said you didn’t like to do?….

anyway you’re underselling the hard work of the writers and game designers and aritsts that worked on this title.. as well as everyone that invested into the game. And $17-$19 is really fuck all to ask for. Not only that but its a bit much to expect indies to voice act their game when most voice actors ask ridiculous amounts in wages. You’re being very unreasonable, but I suspect a lot of the market is acting this way… and frankly its pretty disgusting. It really annoys me to see worse games more successful… hence my attack on casuals.

That said sure the games got problems, the save system is a bit archaic as it uses checkpoints and the lack of sandbox exploration is limiting.. but beyond that its fantastic and worth the price. You’ll get a lot of hours for what you pay for.

Wow, I think if anyone has had their nerves struck, it must be this guy ^^^
Looking forward to this game, need more tactical shooteys.

tacitus42,

well you’re about to get more Tactical shootey.. Satellite Rein got funded. Can’t wait for that one as well. Shadowrun fully delivered.

gammad: You’re still here aren’t you? reading.. you know that thing you said you didn’t like to do?

Again I was referring to reading whilst gaming I’m not a fan of blocks of text, if I wanted to read i’d go online and read an article or I’d lay in bed with a book.

gammad: to expect indies to voice act their game

I don’t expect it I prefer it, mod makers have voice acted mods, indies can’t get some voice acting ?

gammad: You’re being very unreasonable

I’m pretty sure you’re trolling but anyways, I’m not being unreasonable I have preferences as to how I spend my gaming time. One of those is voice acting, I don’t ‘expect’ every game to have voice acting it’s just not having it detracts from my enjoyment of the medium and makes me less likely to purchase and enjoy the title.

gammad: hence my attack on casuals.

So you’re saying how you enjoy spending your time is better than how someonelse does ? Kind of an arrogant view.

gammad: You’ll get a lot of hours for what you pay for.

I’m sure I will I never said it was a bad game I never said lacking voice acting made it unplayable. It’s just something I like in games and with how many games there are too choose and how increasingly limited my time becomes as exams encroach I’m going to spend that time with the most enjoyable games I can find.

Everyone is different I like voice acting some like reading as they can paint them selves a deeper connection the universe. Neither of these is wrong and neither of these are inferior to the other.

spooler: So you’re saying how you enjoy spending your time is better than how someonelse does ? Kind of an arrogant view.

And saying CoD and BF aren’t thought provoking isn’t arrogant anyway? Like you don’t have prejudices yourself, most if not all gamers do. Supporting this game is one more step towards ending the CoD action shooter dominance over the industry hence why so many people backed it during the kickstarter and many other RPGs like it. We’re all sick of it hence why the game exists in the first place.

spooler: I don’t expect it I prefer it, mod makers have voice acted mods, indies can’t get some voice acting ?

Mod makers get away with it because they don’t have to pay royalties and wages to the people working under them, its all voluntary hence its all done free of charge mostly to get the talents name out there. Indies on the other hand have to pay royalties and wages to their voice actors since naturally if someones getting money they want a cut for their part in the product. It’d be nice to have voice actors don’t get me wrong, its just I never expected them in this game given how much it costs to do that.

The games coping a lot of flak from people that share the same attitude as you, that because the game doesn’t have voice acting it doesn’t warrant purchase. These devs need people to buy their game post-release else they can’t keep making games.. the kickstarter guys like myself only provided the capital to make the game.

Naturally because I invested into the project, I’m defensive of people criticizing it. I want this developer to succeed because there’s not enough like them out there. And all things considered I think gamer attitudes of late have been pretty disgusting in general, hence why you get garbage like SimCity 5 and Aliens Colonial Marines coming out and making more money than Shadowrun Returns which costs a fraction of what those games did and is actually a GOOD game.

I want to be clear, if you buy the game in the sales like you said you would, then all is forgiven.. I just want to see this game and its developer thrive.. is that so wrong?

gammad: And saying CoD and BF aren’t thought provoking isn’t arrogant anyway?

from a mechanically point they’re not, or atlest I don’t find them to be. I don’t have to think at all when i’m playing a competitive FPS. they’re as simple as it gets point and shoot, even more advanced games like Natural selection I don’t have to think much.

gammad: Like you don’t have prejudices yourself

? I have things that I don’t like but I don’t label people that play angry birds casuals. Or get up in arms when someone says something I don’t agree with about something I don’t like. Voice acting doesn’t add appeal for you ? Cool that’s great we all like different things gaming is not some special area where we all have to think the same things about the same games.

gammad: We’re all sick of it hence why the game exists in the first place.

Didn’t the last CoD make record sales ? “we” is not every gamer in the world I know alot of people that just play call of duty because it’s quick and brainless fun, the rest of gaming to them is something complex that they don’t have time for and that’s not a bad thing. Again we all consume media differently and have different tastes.

gammad: Mod makers get away with it because they don’t have to pay royalties and wages

Natural selection 2 was a labor of love in large parts from the community there’s entire code made by people that wanted nothing for it but to see the game develop and be the best it could, if they wanted to take that direction I’m sure they could have found a way.
Now really it’s not necessary in a game like this, hell Arcanum is my favorite game of all time and that had next to no voice acting in it but alot of my time now is taken up by study and i want my entertainment to come to me with a minimum of text I spend 10 hours+ a day reading from text books it’s not appealing to have to do that in my increasingly limited free time. Yes I spend time on forums, it’s not the same thing this is something I do briefly while I’m waiting for a bit of programming I’ve done to run or while I’ve watching lectures/course material/etc.

gammad: The games coping a lot of flak from people that share the same attitude as you, that because the game doesn’t have voice acting it doesn’t warrant purchase

Again I never said I won’t buy it, I will pick it up for $10 bucks when and if I can, but there’s no sense me paying full price for a game that right now I don’t have the time or attention span to get into.

But if that’s someones view that’s someones view, if it’s a must for them that’s the way the cookie crumbles if people won’t buy things that aren’t voice acted who can blame them ? The market has a TON of great games that are voice acted if it’s what they want.

Sure we should support indies but not if you’re not going to get enjoyment out of it.

gammad: And all things considered I think gamer attitudes of late have been pretty disgusting in general, hence why you get garbage like SimCity 5 and Aliens Colonial Marines coming out and making more money than Shadowrun Returns which costs a fraction of what those games did and is actually a GOOD game.

Neither of these are games I’ve purchased … because they didn’t appeal to me not because of some moral stance against them.
How do you know how much money aliens made ? I can’t imagine it was much considering how brutally it got bashed in reviews.

it’s likely shadow-run has already out sold it and possible that it has made more revenue at the time of typing this 18,000 people are playing it on steam.

Considering it’s the top of steams “top sales” chart a large portion of these are likely fresh sales outside of the kickstarter.

If the game is solid as it appears to be it looks really fun but it also looks like something that will have to wait untill after exams to me to have sufficient time to enjoy, due to being heavily story based and having (apparently) unreliable save games.

gammad: I want to be clear, if you buy the game in the sales like you said you would, then all is forgiven.

I don’t really need to be forgiven but sure when it’s up for $10 I’ll grab it, not everyone has to like the things you like or buy the things you like tho.

gammad: I just want to see this game and its developer thrive.. is that so wrong?

Certainly not, but there may be better ways of persuading people to give something you really enjoy and have a passion for a chance. Attempting to class them as come kind of inferior label because they don’t automatically share that passion.
