Over 4,000 pilots converge for the biggest battle in EVE Online history

EVE Online

Nearly 3,000 ships have been destroyed today in an enormous space battle that involved over 4,000 EVE Online pilots and over five hours of real-time investment by players around the world.

The TEST Alliance and the CFC, the two biggest player blocs in EVE Online, have been fighting for control of the 6VDT-H system. In order to facilitate accurate and lag-free combat, EVE Online developers CCP slowed the server down to 10% of real time.

Around three hours into the battle, the CFC committed a large fleet of capital ships; a risky move given the enormous real time investment it takes to construct them and the resources they represent. The move paid off however, with the TEST Alliance sounding a general retreat an hour later and ceding sovereignty of the system — and the resources it represents — over to the CFC.

Prolific EVE commenter The Mittani has provided a write-up here from one of the CFC Commanders. There’s also a great wrap-up over at The Verge.

(The enormous blue spheres you can see in the screenshot above are ‘warp bubbles’, which prevent ships within them from jumping to light speed and retreating. The more you know!)

I started playing about two months ago, after reading both the EVE diaries miniseries on here and at the urging of some friends. They’ve far improved the interface since I tried it last, about three years ago. As long as you don’t try to jump straight into nullsec politics (that is, the focus of this article), you should be fine. Oh, and DO THE TUTORIAL MISSIONS.

About the article: I heard that the server capped out at 4000 players, after the goons invaded early, bringing 2400 to the fight?

I dont play EVE either, but that sounds pretty sweet.

It wasn’t that exciting. The amount of dudes in system was too much even for TiDi. Took 5 minutes to lock a target, another 10-15 minutes to actually fire a single volley.

Unfortunately whilst this looks epic is it not necessarily that way participating in it. Its kind of like a raid from any other MMO except it can be a bit slower as you slowly wittle down each others fleets etc etc.

lol might keep some kind of forum diary ?

Certainly an impressive feet, and hat off to the game for being able to make it happen…even if at 10% of normal speed.

Dayum!
