Next Command & Conquer will no longer base its main enemy on Middle-Easterners

Command & Conquer

In a move to avoid offending gamers and customers — and probably just because it’s sort of the right thing to do — Victory Games will be changing the makeup of the upcoming Command & Conquer‘s main enemies to not just be a big mishmash of Middle-Eastern-looking soldiers.

“This is actually a pretty big change for the game,” Victory’s Tim Morten said to Polygon. “Anyone who knows this series will know the Global Liberation Army. But at the studio we had a bad reaction from people saying it was pretty offensive to have Middle-Eastern characters as militants.”

The new Global Liberation Army is now made up of at least five different races.

“Now we’ll probably just offend everybody,” Morten concluded.

They should make the GLA the ‘Great Larakin Aussies’ and have Utes with eskies and boomerangs on the back. And the headquarters for operations can be at Uluru.
They can be made up of the usual White Collar, Blue Collar and Dole Bludger factions.

can i have some shoes

So evil Russians then?

The GLA was only in Generals wasn’t it?

edit: found my answer in an earlier article nevermind

bad reaction from what people ? most of the militant groups that pop into my head are some shade of middle eastern Muslim.

we can’t have games that depict the reality of the middle east ?

If the new game wasnt a F2P microtransaction based game then that could be a mod.

If you can show me the reality of the middle east in a game, go ahead. But I assure you, brown skin, turban and an AK in the desert is not the “reality”, it’s a very small part of a very large part of the world. If terrorism and militant groups are “Middle Eastern” in your mind, then you might need to readjust your view.
Coincidentally, having games often show the baddie-terroist-guys as generic Arab dudes is part of why people associate that kind of violence with that area of the world.

Obviously the context of my statement wasn’t clear.

I’m not saying that’s all of the middle east I’m saying it’s how we identify ‘militant’ generally because well … of all the theaters of war in the world at the moment how many of them involve militant Arabs ?

Really ? it wasn’t Al Qaeda blowing up the world trade center ? or militant aspects of nations over there take a look at Iran at the moment, it wasn’t these militant aspects of the middle east that are why we identify the middle east as ‘militant’, it’s because we have middle eastern villains ?

I associate that kind of violence with that part of the world because well … that’s the part of the world where that kind of violence happens most frequently, no it’s not the only part it’s just the most prominent part.

Spooler, sorry but that’s utter bollocks. The reason that you associate the Middle East with said violence is due to the way they are portrayed on the propaganda box and in the propaganda papers. I gave up looking there for accurate reporting information years ago. It is good though for alerting one to be more vigilant in where they get their information from.

If you want terrorists, just look at the history of the UK and Rep of Ireland, or how groups in Europe during the Cold War would pay other militant groups such as the IRA to go and bomb somewhere completely out of their territory or original reason for existing. That’s just one example, but there are literally hundreds more.

sure the news sources are biased.
but that doesn’t change the fact that these things are happening/have happened unless you’re a member of the Alex Jones crowd and think it’s all a conspiracy.

I associate them with it because they do it, I hope you’re not claiming there is no militant activity in the middle east :S

The history of exactly going back to the cold war is not exactly relevant to how I perceive the term “militant” now
