League of Legends now has Oceanic servers, free transfers available

If you’re one of the seventy-eight billion people on earth who play League of Legends, there’s a good chance you may be excited to learn that Riot has now activated its Oceanic servers.

These servers are located much closer to us and will return a much better ping for Australian players — so now all that’s left to do is transfer onto them! Transfers from NA, LATAM, Russia, Turkey, EUNE and EUW are free for a limited time and early transfers earn rewards.

You can get your free transfer token by heading to the in-game store and clicking on the ‘Other’ tab.

An online tournament will be held from July 6-14, with the top four teams heading to PAX AUS to compete for cash prizes! You can learn more about that tournament right here.

YAYYYYYYYYYY

I’m like the biggest DOTA2 fan there is, but I’m ALSO a big fan of LOL.

I’d like to think that Valve releasing local servers here last year forced Riot’s hand in setting up their own local servers.

YOLOSWAG I’m transferring right now, was a bit worried about the transfer (will there be people playing the other game modes?) but all my friends have moved so there’s no choice now lol.

There’s only Summoner’s Rift available atm, have to make custom games for the other modes.

It’s completely worth it just to have that sweet sweet ping.

Honestly I don’t want to play LoL but they keep sucking me back in… :P

Hmm, is this worth a look for a newcomer? I hear the LoL community isn’t exactly newbie friendly…

I wouldn’t mine giving it ago. Never played it. I guess there is first time for everything.

they didn’t have oceanic servers until now?

lol indeed.

Huh, and yet blizzard still seem unable to get oceanic servers going.

It’s because they like money; when they estimate the value of providing servers (more customers) here outweigh the deficits (requires more expenses to put servers up in more locations) then they’ll do it. I can’t really blame them for it but it is annoying (especially when they use it to counter piracy but it has killed off a lot of long term fans which they saw the effect of with HotS sales; hopefully their sales are equally poor on Titan so they’ll get off their arses). Will they ever provide servers? No idea. For such a big player they really couldn’t care less about it; SWTOR did because they were trying to come onto the scene and didn’t have a decade of goodwill behind them.

About flamin time :)

its pretty late and im tired so not sure if im seeing things

This is fantastic news, but for me personally, improved ping isn’t worth the negatives that come from moving.

Oceanic pros: Better ping.
Better community. (probably, hopefully)

Oceanic cons: Longer queue times, especially for lesser played maps.
Harder to have games during off peak hours (midnight-am)
Less competitive (big fish/small pond)

I’m definitely making an alt account to play with friends, but will probably keep my competitive account on NA.

hol,

This could all change with time, depending who jumps over, and the actual number of oceanic based players. The skill ceiling (floor?) might be lower initially, but depending on incentives, some of the more ‘skilled’ players may jump over pretty quickly, or like you, just have alts.
if the League eSports scene picks up for Australia/Oceania, and being on an Oceanic server is a requirement (seems logical), you’ll definitely have people coming over and playing hard.

I’m not a super pro player, and while the change in ping isn’t going to make me a super star over night, I can definitely notice the difference, especially on more twitch based heroes. The added bonus of course is that you’ll be on a more equal playing field (latency wise) with most other players. Was always fun having a 200-250 ping Allistar attempt to do his combo just to end up knocking the carry away as its dying, then playing another game with a 20 ping Allistar wrecking your face.

I’m not going to pretend to know anything about business or the costs that go along with it but no matter how you look at it, isn’t it fucking pathetic how Riot didn’t do this sooner?

We’re talking about a game that took the game mode into the limelight ever since it’s release. How could they not see a future, profitable or not in Oceanic servers? Whether or not the value of new servers outweighs the ‘deficits’, shouldn’t it be something you wouldn’t have to consider if you’re catering to a whole entire continent?

Riot is a business, yes. But a caring and ‘about-the-gamer’ game company? Far from it. They have become a powerful company, they should seriously consider what that means for them.

pradelus,

How many companies/games have actually put together Australian servers? SWTOR did it, and they eventually shut down. DOTA2 have them going at the moment, and now League. Path of Exile recently got some up, and they also outlined the massive price difference between hosting in Australia and overseas. Oh, and I think there may have been Ultima servers back in the day. If you have any more, feel free to share.

As others have said, if Blizzard can’t even have 1 or 2 legitimately oceanic based servers up for WoW, its not unreasonable for other companies to not have them up. Pretty sure the Oceanic base for most titles are <10% (being generous) of the total player base, yet server hosting cost 5-10x more.

Getting Australian servers for major titles should be something appreciated and welcomed, not met with hate and disgust.
