DirectX 11.2 exclusive to Windows 8.1 and Xbox One

Windows 8.1

By on June 28, 2013 at 6:12 pm

If you want to stay on top of the latest in DirectX technology but you don’t like Windows 8, then you’re probably out of luck — Microsoft has revealed that DirectX 11.2 won’t be supported on Windows 7 or below. It will, however, be supported on Xbox One.

The latest update to DX11 will include ’tiled resources’, which allows the graphics card to make use of system RAM as well in order to improve texture detail.

You can see a video of tiled resources tech in action below.

Anyone getting the whole DX9 phase out vibes?
I don’t think its worth it, and if it gets to a point where it is worth it, we’ll be going for something crazy like 32 gigs of ram each.

Nice try MS but you’re not going to get me using Windows 8 just for DX11.2. Bring back the Start menu (not just the Start button). Then we’ll talk.

the retarded thing was that all of this could be done in DX9. Mega Textures did similar stuff, and nearly every game supports some kind of LOD system or Streaming, so why is this a big deal exactly?

But I want it now with out lossing my data.

Dog move by Microsoft.

They couldn’t get away with all the BS they did on the Xbone and had to back peddle so now they are trying it with windows and forcing an upgrade.

You sons of bitches.

I’m going to hold out as long as possible until my game says “sorry you need to DirectX 11.2 or above to play this game. Hopefully Windows 9 will be out by then.

People really need to get over the Start Menu bs, once I stopped being a complete tool about it I came to realise Windows 8 actually was one hell of a solid and fast OS. Change can be good, don’t be so harsh.

My experience so far tells me that only every second windows release is worth buying.

So yeh, I dont really care. Next windows for me will probably be Win9, no matter what tricks they pull with DirectX.

@Gomes, the same thing applies to Win7, just without those silly changes. Win8 is basically Win7 with tablet features added on top.

mastagomes,

I’m not being a tool about it. I just don’t want to have to fork out more money for something I don’t need. I have Win 7, There isn’t that much damn difference.

Been dabbling in linux gaming lately, doesn’t have a lot but enough to keep me busy.

You’re correct, Vista to 7 was a great change.

Isn’t that what everyone does?

The guys that have SLI Titans will obviously already been on W8, but the rest of us are just going to change when games no longer support anything else (extremely doubtful; BF3 tried DX11 only and had teething problems).

I have heard it is much faster for gaming, but I’m poor, and as long as things run then nothing changes on my computer as it also has a habit of breaking when new components are put in.

So Microsoft, how is it that you think this attempt to entice people to upgrade will go any better than the “DX10 only on Vista” nonsense did? Some of us are old enough to notice history and bad ideas repeating themselves. It’s also a sign that they don’t believe that Win8/8.1 are worth enough to customers on their own.

They’re trying to entice people on to Windows 8, not piss them off. One day I hope MS make their OS changes a streamlined affair without these paid iterations so we can move forward and developers don’t have to support so many platforms.

“they’re trying to “insert microsoft evil here”
maybe they just can’t be bothered putting their new tech on older operating systems ?

Windows hasn’t been good since XP

You clearly have some hidden interest to keep defending them on every occasion no matter what stupid shit they pull, care to share?

I’m Steve Ballmer.

Not really I just look at it from more perspectives than just “Microsoft are evil”

Im sold, take my money.

Um for what am I spending money on again?
