Baldurs Gate team “demoralised” over legal action, Atari named as culprit

Following last week’s news that Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition had been pulled from sale, Beamdog have revealed that their publisher Atari is behind the halt on all development and sales.

“At the request of Atari legal we removed the game from sale on Beamdog and the App stores,” said Beamdog’s Trent Oster to GameInformer. “Atari is still selling the game through their channels. We’re trying to remedy the situation and I’m hopeful we can come to an arrangement.”

Oster described the team’s poor morale at the current situation to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, saying “The prognosis [for resuming work on Baldur's Gate] is mixed. Best case, we can sort this out soon. Worst case, this could be in legal hell for a while. I like making games, but this contractual dispute bullshit keeps me up at night.”

“Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is on indefinite hold, as is the current patch. Baldur’s Gate III, we are still interested in the concept, but currently I’d say were very demoralized.”

BG:EE would have been palatable if, after realizing they couldn’t actually enhance anything, they simply marketed it as a port to mobile platforms. But they decided to keep pretending that they were enhancing things so they could re-sell the game to everyone on the PC platform and piled shit onto the game.

I’m tired of seeing a hacked up gui when I go widescreen patch on bg1 original is there anyway to have a proper gui with no missing parts?

cyrinno,

That’s kinda what BG:EE is… it’s a version without a hacked up gui. Other than a couple of extra NPC’s and better modern day PC compatibility there’s not much enhanced about it. The new intro / cutscenes are a bit of a backwards step though.

Yeah I did like customising my game with all the unofficial patches to the original, gave me a very good game play experience las ttime I played and fixed my most annoying problem with the game, the arrow count :P

I didn’t buy BG EE I was waiting until I could play both before buying any.

I’ve already bought the game twice, CD and GOG versions and have a third copy I found at a garage sale of the original BG2 box lmao that I couldn’t bare to see thrown on the tip.
