Path of Exile to get Australia/New Zealand gateway for better ping

Grinding Gear Games have announced that they are testing an Australia/New Zealand gateway for Path of Exile, to give players much better ping in their free-to-play (and very popular) ARPG.

“We also have an Australian Path of Exile gateway (connected to the rest of the worldwide realm) in testing and will probably turn it on for public testing next week as well,” writes executive producer Chris Wilson on the Path of Exile forums.

“This will hopefully also offer much better performance for New Zealand.”

So a New Zealand made game are adding an Australasian server as a last thought?

???…

PinothyJ,

Can you blame them though with our ridiculous bandwidth/hosting costs here?
It is 10x cheaper to host out of the U.S.

and a bigger market over there in the U.S

Isn’t this a NZ developed game in the first place? I’m surprised that there were no Australian/NZ servers from the word go.

PinothyJ,

They are doing their best, they are a small indie company trying to host an mmo, do you have any idea how expensive hosting is in this country? It costs me like 30 dollars a month to host a tiny Minecraft server. Not to mention, getting a decent server means paying an absolute killing. I’d be surprised if they make any money from this decision. Still glad they are coming out though, the game was fairly laggy for me at some points.

I see no reason to host servers locally … ever really hell i play FPS on U.S servers these days without issue and hosting there is sooo much cheaper /shrug

Yeah the ping made the game unplayable for Australia. Diablo3 has far superior netcode that hides the latency and allows you to move and cast smoothly even with delay, simulating the effect of playing it offline, while PoE just feels really clunky. Abilities go off nearly instantly in D3 despite the 200ms latency, while in PoE there is literally a 200ms lag between you pressing the button and the skill firing.

I’ve been playing on Singapore servers and with my friends we have 1 hiccup every 30-60 minutes… Pretty minor but Aus servers wouldn’t hurt.

Awesome news! Much more likely to take on Hardcore now. I love this game!
