New Command & Conquer will “wash the stain of C&C 4 away”

A new developer diary published by Victory Games indicates that the team don’t seem to think very much of Command & Conquer 4, the last game in the series that they’ve been tasked with rebooting.

“The first thing we said was, we need to kind of wash the stain of C&C 4 away,” said lead designer Samuel Bass to GameInformer.

“To do that, you really have to get back to your roots, back to what it was made your fans your fans in the first place.”

Bass also explained that those fans were after elements such as base construction “that doesn’t feel like a chore; harvesting that doesn’t require your full attention; and a focus on fast action and lots of viable strategies”.

The new Command & Conquer is set to be a F2P affair powered by the Frostbite engine. Here’s an early preview video.

it all sounds good, and at $0 the price is right… but god, C&C 4 was so horrible not even *I* liked it, and i like aliens colonial marines and duke nukem forever :?

I didn’t even finish C&C 4, it was just a mess which tried to do something ‘different’ but failed big time.

And replace it with an even worse stain.

I have no faith at all in this mostly because the C&C franchise for me died with CC3 everything after that was down hill … and rapidly down hill.

I’ll try it out when it’s released but im not expecting much.

I hope they’ve noticed the RTS field has evolved a lot. Like tactical zoom especially ;)

I hope they don’t ruin CC Generals 2 by removing all the tactical building aspects of the game that made it fun just to cater for the watered down game play for the casual dota/dow/spam units rts gamers.

I was really disappointed how the Company of Heroes 2 RTS turned out in the Beta this year. Gun Turrets/Sandbags/tanktraps/defense and building aspects ruined which this game , it no longer felt like the fun which Company of Heroes 1 bought to the table.

Sorry pal, but C&C fans aren’t “your fans”. I’m a fan of whoever made Red Alert 1+2 and C&C 1.

They apparently have bad memories that would be the now defunct westwood

I know which studio made the games. I was referring to the people who actually made the games, who were not this guy.

f2p is a huge warning sign on this, then again C&C was essentially dead when westwood got executed :(

C&C and C&C: Red Alert take first and and second place in greatest ever computer game soundtracks! (A very close third place to Quake 2) I still crank that shit up! Tiberium Sun was the start of C&C’s downfall (soundtrack was shit :) )
“…the stain of C&C 4…” terrible thing to know that a series that was the bee’s knees in RTS (C&C shat all over Warcraft) came crashing down purely because they lost the spirit of what made C&C games so great, but also, they never evolved with the times. Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, Dawn of War and Sins of a Solar Empire have changed the scope and scale of RTS (I leave out Starcraft 2, coz I still think it’s just arty farty wank). Surely there’s no place for a C&C in our time.
Why must they keep bringing back what was fantastic, hoping it will do well again. Anyway, the soundtrack better be awesome…

Exactly. C&C had its soul ripped away from over a decade ago. I doubt a bunch of wannabes will be able to even able to come close to doing it justice, especially based on their last several attempts.

Listen and know that this was a time when C&C actually was decent. Generals and Zero Hour were also good, I have no hope in this latest addition to the series.

To put things into perspective of my gaming of late, I’ve bought 4 indy games in the last 2 months and have sponsored 6 kickstarter games. The sooner the likes of EA, activision etc die like the oxygen thieving scum they are the better.

caitsith01: Samuel Bass

He was however lead designer on Tiberium wars which was pretty epic.

In my eyes, it’s not a C&C game if there’s no music by Frank Klepacki, Generals/Zero Hour excluded.

I payed $20 for C&C 4, took it home, started a skirmish vs ai, played for 5 mins, quit, never played again…. Good Times!

god that c&c 4 playing nod on the winter skirmish map hurt my eyes with the glare or contrast or something, and im someone who use to play cs in the dark and laugh at flashbangs.
