If not Shepard, then who? – Mass Effect team talks spin-off characters

Mass Effect 3

Who would you like to see in the pilot’s seat of a Mass Effect spin-off? After all, there is a pretty big cast of characters to choose from. Sitting down with OXM, the dev team has a chat about who they’d like to see in the starring role of any spin-off action.

“There’s so much that could be told in the Mass Effect universe,” said Casey Hudson. “It’d be cool to do something completely unrelated to the larger storyline, like a story about a private investigator on the Citadel. Or maybe something detailing Garrus’ time in C-Sec.”

“While being one of Shepard’s most loyal friends, Garrus has also had some of the most driven personal goals,” added Dusty Everman. “He’s a hero in his own right, as Archangel and beyond. Who wouldn’t want to see the further adventures of the bold, charming Garrus Valkarian (there’s a lot of guns out there to calibrate).”

Preston Watamaniuk thinks “a game centred on brutal Krogan combat with more of a melee focus could be pretty exciting.” Personally, I would love to play a Mass Effect game as a Krogan. Throw in a romance subplot with Wrex and I’ll buy the super-mega special edition, thank you very much.

Mac Walters, though, is hard-pressed to make a decision. “Aria. The Illusive Man. Kai Leng. Any henchman. The list goes on. I think most of them could have successful spin-offs of their own in some fashion.”

It’s unclear from the interview whether the team are talking possible starring roles for Mass Effect 4, or if they are riffing ideas about a possible standalone spin-off. It seems like it’s probably speculation at this point, but that doesn’t make the whole thought exercise any less fun. Which one of your favourite characters would make a good spin-off? Maybe some sort of Facebook game where you play a Keeper that wanders around the Citadel performing maintenance! Thrilling.

I’d like to play as a Prothean spanning the centuries before and during the Reaper invasion 50,000 years ago. Not as Javik though, someone different. It’d be pretty bleak knowing it’s all going to end in extinction. Plus it’d be cool to explore the ME universe before the main ‘current races’ had evolved with a new different group of aliens.

A trilogy spinoff would be great. No shitty standalone titles please.

The answer is Blasto

Heh all Blasto aside, i’d like to do Kai Leng for some sword action with Illusive man (not in the gay way).

Eww Kai Leng…

I don’t usually agree with Ralph.. but BOOM! This would be magical.

Aria would be kewl…everyone knows she was Aleena…so from her time as a merc fighting Wrex…then taking Omega…just a thought

With excitement : the Elcor are by far the most interesting non-mainstream race.

jimmah,

With varied dismay: The elcor should have attained more screen time in ME3, all the other races forgot about us.
