The Adopt-a-Server Program is back! Take one of our servers and make it your own Adopt-a-Server Program

By on April 18, 2013 at 3:48 pm

In 2010, we kicked off the original Adopt-a-Server Program and gave our admins a server of their own to customise and kit out in any way they saw fit — and a huge number of new servers opened up, boasting all sorts of game modes and configs we just weren’t expecting.

Now, in 2013, we’re taking this a step further. The new Adopt-a-Server Program isn’t just for admins — it’s for you. That’s right, you, reading this, right now. We want to give you the chance to take one of our servers and make it your own.

Woah! How does this work?

First of all, this offer is only open to iiNet group customers — in other words, the fine people who pay for to exist in the first place.

Assuming you’re one of those people, all you need to do to apply is head over to our Contact Page and select ‘Adopt-a-Server’ from the drop-down menu. Tell us which of the below games you’d like to adopt a server for, and make sure you supply your ISP email address and your username when completing the form so we can verify you are an iiNet group customer.

The following games are available for adoption:

  • Battlefield 1942
  • Battlefield 2
  • Battlefield Bad Company 2
  • Call of Duty 4
  • Chivalry Medieval Warfare
  • Counter-Strike Global Offensive
  • Counterstrike Source
  • Counterstrike 1.6
  • Counterstrike CZ
  • Day of Defeat Source
  • Killing Floor
  • Left4Dead2
  • Live For Speed
  • Mount&Blade
  • OpenTTD
  • Other
  • Red Orchestra 2
  • ShootMania
  • Team Fortress 2
  • The Ship

Some things you need to know

There are a limited amount of servers available for each title, so we can’t accomodate every request. Also, we can’t devote hardware to something that’s not being used — so please be aware that we will be reviewing adopted servers every two months and making sure that they’re being used. If an adopted server is empty, we will take it away and re-allocate it to somebody else.

These servers can be left public or made private. You can brand or label them any way you wish. Please keep in mind that if you make your server private for just you and your mates however, and we come by in two months and see that nobody is using it, we’ll steal it back from you and give it to somebody else. If our hardware isn’t being used, your money isn’t doing its job.

Sometimes the servers will go down! There is no guarantee of uptime, though obviously we try our hardest to keep them operational. To report a problem with your server, visit the Contact Page and choose ‘Report a problem with a game server’ from the drop-down menu.

And another, final reminder that this offer is only available to iiNet group customers.

What are you waiting for?

Get cracking! Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Someone adopt a ShootMania Royal server and you can count me in to come play :D

Nice idea. But. None of those games interest me even in the slightest, If I was to “adopt a server” it would have to be a game I like and like to play often. :P

That’s… insane. What an offer!

What about server rules? Is that up to the person who adopts it? Can someone start a knife-pistol server for BF3 (against EA’s dedicated server rules iirc) or a hack-server where botting is encouraged? Racism? Swearing?

That aside, this is seriously impressive.

I’ve updated the list with The Ship :D

What a great idea. If only you had done this when i was playing tf2 heaps a few years ago. I would have adopted a tf2 server faster than you can blink and put a bunch of great custom maps up.

I used to argue almost futilely on the forums to try get a custom maps tf2 server up. After months, we finally got one but the map rotation sucked and the server emptied when certain maps came up. We tried to get maps changed and a better rotation as well as map voting, and we eventually did but map voting was outright dismissed as a no-no for tf2 gon servers at the time.

Unfortunately by the time the map rotation was changed the server wasn’t played much anymore as people had found better servers. So 6 months later gon axed it, turned it into a normal server and it still didn’t get much use….

Anyway i hope this see’s a bunch of great servers come about. Of course it has the potential to be abused or neglected. But i suppose the risk is that you will unlikely be able to adopt another after abusing or neglecting one.

man didnt dice let bf1942 go free for its 10th aniversary lately? mmm original beefs…

I lost my disc 1 like YEARS ago and have RAGED ever since, WOOO

Needs a Quake 3, UT99 or UT2004 option.

Incorrect, it was never axed. It was broken occasionally, never axed.
There’s also mapvote and various other things enabled these days.

But hey, now’s your chance!

I need to talk some of the LCC community members to see if we need some support. This is a nice offer.

The Ship The Ship The Ship The Ship!!!

We need a good old Quake 3 Rocket Arena 3 + CPMA server.

I just signed up to node, but not connected yet… does that count? >.>

aww no Natural Selection 2 servers to adopt :( But I want to give them my love !

The lack of Unreal Tournament (2k4 preferably) distresses me greatly.

If we run a server for it and it’s not in the list, pop the request in anyway :). I’m more then happy to hand over a NS2 server for a while if you and the community are going to use it :).
