New Planetary Annihilation footage surfaces, shows in-engine base building

Planetary Annihilation

Following a stream on Friday evening, Uber Entertainment have released a recorded video showing their first-look at in-engine base building. It’s looking good, and even better is the news that they’re aiming for the end of May as the first alpha testing window. It’s a nineteen minute video but it’s worth a watch, and it’s great to see your Kickstarter dollars at work. Take a look:

Damn that looks good, going to see some really interesting tactics when this comes out.

Shit! I am excited.

It’s nothing special at the moment.

It just shows that they almost have basic functionality working for the game. They still need to implement “GAMEPLAY UP TO 40 PLAYERS”, as well as multiple planets and innerstellar travel among other things before balancing heavily. Sure having vehicles go under trees is nice, but you need to show us the engine can handle the size of the bases we were shown in the trailer (where they claim trailer is what they want the final product to be) then I’ll start getting excited.

As it stands now it has less depth than TA to it, for obvious reasons.

Wow captain buzz kill over here.

rapid101,

It looks like major progress over the previous video. If progress continues like this the next video may look closer to an actual game. Then the next after that will be even more amazing. It’s getting real interesting watching progress on this game, I can’t wait for what I’ll see in future.

kinkykel,

Was thinking the exact same thing. :/

Despite what rapid101 has said the game is coming along very nicely so far, the replay system was particularly impressive.

The game also isn’t online only which is good news but they should really define what they mean by the server because it continues to be confusing whenever they refer to it.

Also 14:50, EXACTLY my attitude towards last hitting in MOBA’s (but let’s not turn this into a MOBA thread, I just needed to get that off my chest ^_^ ). SupCom works great without a minimap too though I wonder what challenges will arise from the spherical planet as well as assuming there will be multiple planets to keep track of.

Lastly i’m not a huge fan of the blocky aesthetic, kinda dull to me (yes I know very early days but i’d imagine the style to remain consistent).

rapid101,

Obvious reasons being that the game is still at a pre-alpha stage?

rapid101 – what a silly post.

It looks great, considering the stage of development. If they’ve got it looking this good so quickly, the finished product will be awesome.

The video certainly had that special TA feel to it – e.g. the yet-to-be-built structures popping up when placing a new building, the nanolathing…

exe3,

I like the art style, it’s got a certain charm to it. It’s one of the things that drew me to the kickstarter to begin with. (that and you can blow up planets – who could be adverse to that?)

very unprofessional video, but looking ok

Yeah I agree with exe3 though. Whilst it does have a certain charm, I enjoy curves, and smoothness.

I was impressed with the replay feature and their ideas about utilising it, i.e. seeing a dead unit and clicking on it to see how it died.

I’m also interested to see what their galactic wars is going to be aswell.

It was a live stream that was recorded.

I know they still have a lot of stuff to implement but I personally feel that even in this barebones form it is already looking special. Even just the fact that the world has no real boundaries should make gameplay really exciting. I’m really surprised how far they have come already!

mercinarie: very unprofessional video

I’m guessing you haven’t seen the video streams of them sitting in front of the green screen with a spaceship bridge in the background. This one is pretty professionally done in comparison! :p

Rapid101 has a point there’s nothing special here nothing to show that this title is going to be able to live up to it’s pretty massive claims.

Don’t get me wrong it looks great so far but it’s got a long way to go before it becomes as impressive as their claims.

There’s also nothing here to say it wont live up to the massive claims either. It’s a half full or half empty situation.

I can understand the want to not be excited in case it fails, But unless it has EA slapped on the side rapid101 will always take the negative approach, which is fine, it’s good to have a group you support. I like to spread my support a bit wider.

mrthumpy,

Obvious reasons not to get hyped over nothing?

kinkykel,

I’m a realist mate, sorry for not being biased. When they have something unique to show, then I’ll start getting hyped. As it stands, even Spore civilisation stage has done more.

Also, I remember you still not learning how to read a Financial Report yet still judging EA’s business practices. Hmm. Sign of a genius here.

caitsith01,

The last 10% of the game takes up 90% of the time.

It’s nice that they’ve had 6 months to get this far, but try not to forget that they have another 16 months to go.

vcatkiller,

Last video was actual progress, with showing the planets being generated.

All they added here was put their pathfinder in game, and actually allowed buildings to go down. The pathfinder that they’ve even said has been used since SupCom 2 by the man who’s implementing it.

The replay system, nice, but actually having it running in a full match with aesthetics turned up to pretty and with things going on is something different to a dozen units being remembered. I’m not expecting Achron levels of smoothness here, but when they can show a sizeable amount of units being used under it (isn’t technical limitatiosn the bane of any RTS dev’s existence) then I’ll be happy.

rapid101,

non biased-Realist my ass. I read your comments in the number of simcity stories posted. You attack anyone quick to mention EA’s business practices.

If you actually look at the bottom right of the video it has pre-alpha there in big letter throughout the video. So saying has no depth at this stage of the game is like saying a lasagna looks bland when the pasta is still in the pot cooking.

As for asking for 40 player battle in game videos, when they’ve only just got the engine running in a state to show it off… who being a realist now?

Standard rapid rule of thumb:

Has EA sticker on – defend game like any insult against game/EA is a personal attack of the highest order. EA can do no wrong, they’re absolutely the most perfect business on the face of the earth.

No EA sticker on – well must be bad. Even if only pre-alpha footage with no gameplay the game’s going to be terrible. The game must look like it’s at release state or it’s absolute garbage.

Must be something to do with financial reports. Yeah.

It’s nice that they’ve had 6 months to get this far, but try not to forget that they have another 16 months to go.

I’ll try my hardest.

I haven’t seen him say anything about it being bad ?

just that there’s nothing “special” here yet which alot of you are claiming is incorrect, I really want to see this game succeed hence why i have invested monies in it. But there’s no reason to attack the guy because he has an opinion.

Sure it’s pre-alpha they don’t have the ability to show us future development yet which will no doubt be more impressive, but there’s nothing wrong with stating “what’s here is basic”.

I really worry that you guys are hyping up nothing here.
Also the Rapid hate is pretty silly.

*edit*:
The term pre alpha is kind of stupid as anything internally coded is “Alpha” the gaming community just doesn’t understand how software development works so developers have to invent titles for things which is silly.
