League of Legends now allowing paid server transfers

League of Legends

Want to jump between the North America and EUW or EUNE servers in League of Legends? Now you can — but be advised, it’s a one-way trip (so make sure you double-check which server you’re headed to!) and will cost you 2600 Riot Points.

The activation of the feature was announced overnight, with a reminder that if you’re a European player who joined the North American server before June 1 2010, and weren’t able to transfer at the time, you will get a shiny free one-time transfer token.

If you’ve got questions, hit up the FAQ.

that’s insane, Why can’t they just join the servers up so you could play with EU players and vice versa ?

Well there is the problem with ping, it not being as simple as ‘joining the servers up’ (do any games do this?) and LoL having a big enough player base that they can divide the player base.

The real issue I have with this is the disgusting expectation that you have to pay to transfer to a different server and that you can do it only once. It makes me very wary about transferring to Australian servers (yes they are making them) because if it turns out to be a mistake (low playerbase meaning long que times for example) then there’s no going back it seems.

Whaaa ? Dota 2 for a start you can play on any server in the world.
Most games you can play in different world locals it’s a fairly new concept to be restricted to your “zone”

Yeah, DOTA2 and HON allow you to play on any server you want in the world with your account. Riot are many years behind Valve and S2 in their server architecture and engineering.

This news is pointless anyway, US or EU, you’ll be hitting 300ms ping. What we need in Australia is local servers (which both DOTA2 and HON also provide) and a free transfer to it for Aussies… but I’ve been waiting 2 years and I’ve kind of lost faith in it happening. I’d be playing my LoL account a lot more if I could get 30ms ping on it like I do in DOTA2.

I think I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you were saying someone connected to a US server being able to be in the same game as someone connected to an EU server at the same time.

Being able to freely change between servers is what I was referring to when I blasted Riot for having the gall to charge to change servers and for only making it one way.

Also as for the comment that “Australia doesn’t have enough of a userbase to support a local server”… I was half thinking it was true, but there was no way to tell until they – or someone – tried it. Then DOTA2 tried it, with far less users (DOTA2 has at most 300,000 concurrent users, while LOL has 3 million concurrent users at peak)… and even with 1/10th the number of users, my queue time on the Australia DOTA2 server is about equal with the queue time on the LOL NA server – both are about a 6 minutes queue. I’d say they could EASILY support an Australian server with the number of players here.

Anyway, wish there was some way I could make this logic known to the guys at Riot =P

More than likey, the australian servers would be an APAC server. so there’d be more than enough player base to support it.

People had worries about the playerbase for the World of Tanks servers, during the low time they’re still sitting around 7k+ users, so it’s going well. Just takes times and free server transfers.

Just in case you guys didn’t notice from my original post, they ARE making Australian servers and they’ll be based in Sydney. They won’t commit to a release date in case something unexpected happens but expect them to be up within a year (probably much sooner but who knows).

exe3,

I missed that in your post. That is excellent news.

I would prefer to see either free transfers, or no transfers at all. Paid transfers would just seem like a money grab, with people like me probably choosing to re-level up an account instead….

From what i’ve seen based on what they’ve done in the past the transfer is free to begin with (a few weeks/months) but then after a while you have to pay to transfer.
