Homeworld Kickstarter campaign fails to secure rights to the IP, refunding money

If you pledged to the TeamPixel Kickstarter to raise funds for the team to buy the rights to Homeworld, then there’s some bad news for you this morning I’m afraid: the auction for the rights was won by somebody else.

TeamPixel revealed in a Kickstarter update that the auction had come and gone and they had failed to secure the rights, and would be refunding the money. You can expect an email about this soon.

They will still be moving ahead with developing their own Homeworld-inspired RTS, but it’ll be an original property now and not an official sequel. There’s no word on who the buyer of the IP was at the end of the auction, though hopefully this will be revealed soon.

Meanwhile, former Homeworld developers are releasing their own sci-fi RTS, which is looking kinda cool.

Good, they were web-developers with no game development experience having very lofty dreams of acquiring a AAA gaming IP with the primary of acquiring it to be able to resell it on Steam/GMG to make money that would only then go to games development.

didn’t even know this was a kickstarter.

Ah, they didn’t stand a chance.

I know the guys that are making Nekro were planning on bidding on this.

I agree with above!
This is a good thing these guys didn’t get the IP!
Give it to a real developer!

Cause a house isn’t always a home!

Cause a house isn’t always a home!

But a home IS a man’s castle.

Often it’s the banks castle being leased by the man :P

Also no one was praying for a new Homeworld? What’s wrong with a flash powered web based Homeworld? if you except everything?

Hardware looks awesome!

I could personally borrow more money from the bank than these guys managed to have ready for the auction (and im a poor uni student). That anyone ever thought this would be successful is embarising

So sad, but thanks it wasn’t happen to the game I am playing at http://www.igamesforgirls.com/celebrity.
