Saints Row IV due in August, pits Saints against aliens

The rumours were right. New Volition owner Deep Silver has announced an August multiplatform release for Saints Row IV. Precise Australian dating has not been confirmed, but the US is looking at August 20 and it should hit Europe by August 23, so throw a dart between those two dates and hope.

Saints Row IV was first announced as an expansion to Saints Row: The Third called Enter the Dominatrix, and was later spun off to a stand alone game and finally full sequel. It follows on from the plot of the previous game but somehow manages to get even sillier. The Saints are made “leaders of the free world” after the player character is elected as president of the United States, and are soon faced with the greatest turf war of all time thanks to a “catastrophic alien invasion occurs”.

Thankfully, our friends are now equipped with “gargantuan superpowers”. I can’t decide if this is amazing or otherwise. Press should get first hands-on over the next few weeks, notably at PAX East in Boston, so we’ll await further reports.

Everything about this is great.

August isn’t too far away. Hopefully they have kept the magic that made SR3 so fun and put it into this one too.

Having not played SR3 yet (still >_> ) I fear Yahtzee may have been right and that Volition may have lost the plot with SR. SR was never moronic idiotic crazy nutballs insane like I saw in that trailer. It was generally serious but surrounded by really over the top and amusing things which is where it got all its lols from. Simply put it was still grounded in reality it was just really over the top with the contrast between the seriousness and the over the top enhancing the funny and playful factor. The stuff I just saw looks like it comes from a completely different game. Fun? Maybe. Funny? Maybe. Saints Row? Not really no.

I think I should get back into SR2 after I finish GoW Ascension so I can play SR3 to see what has changed (maybe it’s a good thing that that awesome character died because they were very much a serious character who just happened to be hilariously legit insane, they possibly wouldn’t have survived in a purely nutty game).

Saints Row is better off trying to be completely manic in my opinion. Without it it’d just be a GTA-clone with coop.

I’m happy to see the game get crazier and to get more pretty clothes.

Is it August yet?

exe3,

I agree, what made SR2 so good was that the story was played fairly straight, it was just the things that happened around the story that were over the top. SR3 just tries too hard to be ‘zany’ all the time, it works sometimes (and it’s still a lot of fun), but it doesn’t have the magic of SR2.

I dunno, while I thought the SR2 story was fine it didn’t really do anything to stand out from GTA. What makes Saints Row IS the zany over-the-top stuff. I felt SR3 worked better in that regard, because the story fully embraced the world in which it lived.

trailer 10/10 would watch again.

edit: pause at 33 seconds.

Looks fucking awesome. Do want very, very much.

GTA clearly have their grey and brown boringly serious world now and that’s fine. Some people like that, I definitely San Andreas was the peak of their series which had just enough randomness to make it interesting without being over the top. They’ve clearly been forced to go the other way with the increasing popularity of SR who are now moving further down the wacky route. I’m perfectly fine with that as long as they keep it as fun as SR3 was, that shit was awesome.

For me, Vice City was the peak. Sure, I’m an 80s guy so that helps. But it’s more than that. Second up is Ballad of Gay Tony, with Damned close behind. In all three instances, it was the story that caught me.

Saints Row is madness, but there’s still story there. Something to be told, explained, explored. GTA4 vanilla did have this also, but it was .. I don’t know .. moments of awesome in a world of mud.

I don’t think I like the idea of this, my favourite parts of SR3 were early in the game, as soon as there were plasma rifle toting military types driving tank convoys around the streets it started to suck.

Sure at first it was epic but after a little bit it just distracted me from the bits i really like about the game. It wasn’t even over the top, it was just a total killjoy.

Hahah, what the nuts. This might actually convince me to buy a Saints Row game.
