Opt into the Skyrim 1.9 beta on Steam and experience new ‘Legendary’ mode

By on March 5, 2013 at 8:19 am

Bethesda continue to patch and patch Skyrim, and they’ve announced overnight that the 1.9 beta is now available for Steam users.

The beta brings with it a new ‘Legendary’ mode where you can not only select Legendary as a difficulty level to make things a whole lot harder for yourself, but also allows you to make skills of 100 into ‘Legendary’ skills. “This will reset the skill to 15, return its Perks and allow the skill to affect leveling again,” writes Bethesda.

“This effectively removes the overall level cap.”

I briefly toyed with using that as the headline for the article, I’ll admit

Legendary skills that effectively removed the level cap? Should have been present from day one.

In November this game will have been out for two years, if they’re still patching it then, it really shows how unfinished it was when they released it… even if they’re still fixing and releasing new content now.

You make it sound like fixing and releasing new content is a bad thing. Skyrim has never really felt unfinished, but more content will always be accepted. If you want a bug free, content complete Elder Scrolls, how about picking up one of their previous titles, GOTY style?

Well that’s one way of looking at it I guess… But I think most would offer nothing but praise for the continued support.

Exactly, damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Wow. I just don’t have the words.

So… if you return all your perks so you can level up again, what are you gaining? Is it just health and mana that gets increased with level? Apart from being able to effectively respec, that is.

You could also unlock more perks, I would assume

hang on, so they refund your perks and reset the level to 15, so i can grind smiting up, get the perks from the level ups, and use that to farm all my perks on a single character or can you legendary only one skill set per toon?

I know ay, instead of bitching be happy they’re still fixing little niggles in the game. It had its problems, nothing really bad though considering the scale of the game/map.

This game is still addictive lol

Listen you lot, maybe I have high standards or you have low standards, but the game was so broken and un-optimised upon release that it wasn’t funny. I returned my copy because I thought it was that bad, and I contacted the developers to give them my opinion. I know it’s hard to make a game of this scale, I do appreciate that they’ve kept working on it and released additional content for it, as well as fostering modding from the community.

HOWEVER, what I do not like is that the fact that game was released when it was unpolished. Why? Because of the chance to use the gimmicky release date of 11/11/11 for no good reason beside the numbering and the fact that it was a tuesday (when most games are released it seems). The game released, and the executable had zero to few optimisation flags enabled when it was compiled. The developers confirmed this. Remember SkyBoost? TESVAL? Both of those addons greatly increased performance of the game because it was so badly UNOPTIMISED.

I’d argue that this was the publisher’s fault, but this is a steam-only game, and bethesda are only part of zenimax media and have been around a long time. I would imagine they have some clout when it comes to these things.

Regardless, I leave the blame with Zenimax/Bethesda for releasing the game in such a poor state.

I re-bought the game excactly one year after it was released, after going through and reading the numerous patch logs. It’s not a bad game. It lacks some depth though. Someone once desribed as a vast ocean that’s only a centimetre deep. There’s many things in the game but not all of them are well thought out or work properly.

What I am trying to get across is that it should be wholly unacceptable to release games/software in such a state, for an entirely gimmicky release date of all things.

I understand that if they didn’t release it and kept working, they’d miss that christmas season. So what. There’s always next year and publishers/developers should make sure they have other projects to keep some profit flowing. If you don’t, it’s poor planning, and you shouldn’t compromise the quality just to release earlier. You can’t put the genie pack into the bottle. The horse has bolted. You can’t just remove a game from the market and re-release it.

You don’t release a car without an engine or a plane without wings and then release them later. You do everything right from the beginning and make sure it bloody well works… if it doesn’t work… fix it, or remove it. That is just my opinion. Yours may differ.

i see your point linkin but next time you buy a big open world game with character customization, story mode, ect which doesnt have bugs in it when its released (no matter how long it takes) please tell us all of this wonderful game that you find.

I don’t expect no bugs, that’s feasibly and financially impossible. They could have thought out skills and levelling properlly, I mean you could have just spammed making iron daggers to level 100 smithing from the start. They fixed that, as well as only being able to make one item at a time. That royally sucked.

As Barney Stinson says “Legen.. wait for it.. dary”
