The news that Steam was now officially available for Linux has seemingly empowered many would-be Linux gamers around the world to get their act together, as the latest Steam Hardware Survey shows.
The results, posted by Valve, show an uptake in Linux usage from a combined 0.8% (across all Linux distros) to 2.02%, indicating a more-than-doubling over the total number of Linux users. Of course its only a mere percentage point when compared to the juggernaut that is Windows 7, but such a quick uptake in such a small time is undeniably impressive.
Speaking of Windows 7, that juggernaut has taken a very small downturn, dropping down to 69% of total users. Windows 8 however has made gains, indicating that perhaps gamers aren’t as opposed to the new OS as reports may have indicated.

i actually like W8. i just ignore the start screen and its pretty much W7, but faster :)
I’ll upgrade to W8 when I have to. No need for me to upgrade from 7 – 8. I don’t have that kind of money just lying around anymore.
On the day that most major applications run on Linux, I will joyously jump over.
I am unhappy with the latest iterations of Windows and Mac OS, but for now I’m stuck with them.
Windows 8 runs much smoother then 7 so I’ll take the funky start menu in exchange for performance gains anyday(in both desktop, bootup and 3d games)
If you have win 7 it’s not worth the upgrade to Win 8. If you have Win Xp or lower, Win 8 is a fantastic and cheap upgrade.
That said I enjoy Linux as well, it does have a lot more learning required for it.
How much of this “uptake” is people installing Ubuntu quickly, launching TF2 to get Tux, then never touching the OS again?
I’m thinking it’s a lot.
It would be a lot the expiry for getting Tux for TF2 was March 1st this year.
I’m unhappy with the direction Microsoft are going, but at the same time I’ve had enough experience with Linux distros to know that something which works in one version can break in the next (or just simple kernel regressions), this obsession to reinvent desktop UIs for whatever reason, and of course application availability.
Heck, at this point I’m not even sure I can move to Linux – my wife loves Adobe Acrobat Pro and Office 2010 and there’s nothing which compares in Linux, and I’m not going to piss her off. :)
Are games like Fallout 3 still having issues with W8?
