Valve and JJ Abrams announce plans to collaborate on both films and games

Gabe Newell and JJ Abrams at DICE 2013

During a carefully-prepared presentation at the DICE Summit overnight, Gabe Newell and JJ Abrams took the stage to discuss the relative merits of storytelling across both film and game mediums — before ending on the announcement that they were going to be teaming up to work together on bringing a Half-Life or Portal adaptation to the big screen.

JJ Abrams, who was recently announced to be directing the first Disney-owned Star Wars film, also revealed that there were plans to work with Valve to bring a new game to market based on Abrams’ ideas.

Astute readers may recall that Valve worked with Abrams on creating an ‘interactive trailer’ of sorts for his 2011 film Super 8 within Portal 2, a collaboration which apparently inspired further discussion on ways the two could work together to improve storytelling across both mediums.

Completely agree with Abrams comment on mute characters. I don’t understand what Gabe was going on about Cloverfield unless he’s talking about those times when people are screaming to the characters to do something logical in which that’s a problem of trashy writing rather than the medium.

Good god JJ better not ruin these films with a ass load of lens flares

So i’ve recently been made aware that people think he uses lots of lensflare. I thought the lensflare was pretty cool in Star Trek. Otherwise I don’t think i’ve seen anything else he’s made.

It’s okay, I’ve beat him to it:

I am curiously looking forward to a possible Portal 2 movie.

JJ Abrams wants to be as loved by nerds as Joss Whedon. So far he is on the right path. Having both Star wars and Star trek is too much power for one person.

The lens flare on Star Trek were all natural, caused by the on-set lighting, none were added in post, except for purely digital scenes.
Personally I didn’t mind it, and it is certainly not his trademark as others claim.
I am definitely curious to see what they can come up with.

Also, did Gabe lose weight? like, by half?

jimmy35,

He lost weight by Half…life

Wow.. seriously… JJ now has Star Trek, then Star Wars.. and then suddenly and soon after Half Life?!

This is a bit to much for my geekgasms to handle. Im frightened, i never expected a geek love affair with JJ..

damn, thats awsome! :D i have faith he could make a great half life movie :)
