The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt announced – to have massive open world, bigger than Skyrim

The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt has been announced in the latest issue of GameInformer US. The third installment in the beloved mature fantasy franchise will depart from its usual structure however, and boast an open world to rival that of Skyrim.

The world itself will take 30 to 40 minutes to cross on horseback, its been said, and the landmass will be 20% larger than that of Skyrim as well. There are other departures from the previous games’ stylings, including Geralt’s complete lack of cares to give with regards to fighting for a political faction. His new honeybadger-like attitude probably stems from the fact that he has all his memories back now and would rather spend his days killing monsters and solving crimes.

The image of a companion of unknown race, gender and appearance still gives this reporter hope that The Witcher 3 will be a buddy cop RPG. As for platforms, the article doesn’t mention any one specifically but does say it will be released on “all top-of-the-line” consoles, while the cover of GI calls it “must see next-generation RPG”.

It all sounds rather delightful, apart from the fact that Geralt is now sporting a beard, which I can’t say I’m particularly fond of. Oh well, I’ll just mod it out. Here is a video that CD Projekt RED have made available for you! Speculation GO!

PARDON ME, SORRY, DIDN’T MEAN TO LEAVE SPLOOGE IN YOUR COMMENTS.

This is incredible, I knew it was coming but to have it announced… my anticipation for GTAV has diminished, replaced by my hunger for Witcher 3.

Seriously pumped. The only thing that could outdo my excitement would be a new STALKER title.

Probably my favourite franchise over the last few years. Can’t wait to see what they can do with an open world environment.

fuck yes, a new STALKER and my life would be complete lol need to finish the first witcher! i’ve heard the 2nd is better, so i need to make time :D

Wonder if CDPR will go digital only for this title given what happened with The Witcher 2′s retail release.

Yep…

Majorly excited.

Um, isnt this throwing the baby out with the bathwater?

I thought the witchers strengths were in not being open-world but rather a focused area and corresponding focused story, and it failed the most when it went to generic open-world sections.

This seems like theyve sat down, come up with a list of every feature from the witcher that skyrim doesnt have, and then removed them all.

Wow… I’m so excited!!!

I’m really looking forward to finally seeing Ciri (Shes the one on the horse next Geralt in the concept art) and Yeniffer in the game. The open world aspect sounds amazing as long as they can craft it into something the same level they did in Witcher 2.

Witcher 1 was more open world than Witcher 2 which was more narrative driven. It will be interesting to see where CDPR head with this one. I absolutely adore the series not to mention the books so can’t wait!

I wish i could get into these games :( they looks so amazing but every time I touch one I just end up confused and bored wishing I could just avoid the gameplay and let the story play out.

Ahh Cd Projeckt Red, one of the few handful of Dev/Pubs that actually still give a shit about the PC Platform, Consumers first and foremost, Non-Nickel and Diming – in fact FREE Dlc, and arguably most importantly – making ACTUAL in depth RPG’s as opposed to the crap “action adventure” cop-outs that Bioware slap together these days.

Though I fall into the small minority of people who actually preferred the combat of the first game, and felt the sequel’s was a more consolized hack and slash affair that I couldn’t really get into. Wonder what they have planned for the third.

Also I wonder if they will actually try to carry things over properly this time around…..(Choose to marry and live with Shani – opening scene of sequel is me in Bed with Triss…. Dafuq.. :/)

coatsy22,

Can’t help but agree with this statement on some level but let’s wait and see first.

Really need to finish the first and play the second before I start to get excited about this one. *reinstalls Witcher from last reformat*

I love The Witcher, I just hope this doesn’t go too elderscrollsy.

“I used to be a Witcher, like you, until I…Geralt, please put away that sword. Geralt. GERALT! NOOOOOOOO!”

Yeah let’s not get too Elder Scrollsish. Still, sounds really good. Can’t wait to see more. :)

I think we might be a little to focussed on the Skyrim reference, i’m pretty sure they awere just using it to give us an idea of how big the world is rather then the gameplay.

Wait a conclusion to the trilogy? Please say it ain’t so. So over people making “trilogies”. Just make as many flipping games as you like, don’t limit yourself to a set number wow.

Also I wonder if they’re using a new engine or not.

flabcab,

My comment was a mostly tongue in cheek. I was kind of imagining Geralt’s reaction to one of the most abused and unfunny memes in history.

Actually wouldn’t mind if some gameplay elements floated across from the Elder Scrolls series as well as the world size. The Elder Scroll series have had some very good ideas over the ages you know.

Sooo, mathematics says that the game world will be approximately 9km across if the horse is cantering which will equate to roughly 81km² if the world is square. That, however does not line up with the 20% larger as the Skyrim map is 14.8km².

Unless, of course, if CPR have recognised that a horse cannot canter forever and it is a trotting horse is which this area will be around 5.4km across and 29.16km² which is still a lot larger than the 20% comparison.

This all seem like sandbox values when compared to Just Cause 2′s almost 1,000km² and ARMA 2′s 225km² world maps…

exe3,

The engine’s pretty much the same as Witcher 2 although a new generation of it so expect to see similar graphics with some bells and whistles. It’s not next generation but boy will it still be a pleasure to look at. Witcher 2 is still gorgeous and while not as advanced as the Cryengine or Frostbite engine shows what it needs to well.

and then we get the people that complain about companies releasing the sme I.P over and over again.
I’m not a big fan of the witchers game-play but CDPR are a pretty good company and they do things “their way” i’m sure they just feel this is the logical stopping point to this particular story in this franchise

colour me damn well excited, it seems like cd projekt red can do no wrong, love their games.
