RAGE mod tools finally available to all

rage

It’s been 15 months since RAGE released. As id Software’s first new property since 1996′s Quake, it had some pretty big shoes to fill, and didn’t quite manage it. But regardless of the game’s critical reception and an unfortunately buggy PC launch, the new engine at the heart of it – id Tech 5 – is still a glorious piece of engineering.

And now you can get in and fiddle with it at last. The RAGE Tool Kit is available now on Steam, via the Tools section where you’ll find other mod suites like Skyrim’s Creation Kit. The 35GB download includes idStudios, game maps, and assets.

This isn’t a user-friendly WYSIWYG editor, but aimed at the really celever modders among you, so before you get started check out the handy welcome guide and FAQ; the latter also includes an EULA.

If you have any success with the tools over the next few weeks, let us know; I’d love to see what you do with one of the most interesting engines out there today.

Modders…go forth and fix ugly console textures!!

What, people still play this thing? Shock!

might keep an eye on the mods that come out for this…been planning on getting it, just been busy with way too many other games lol

This is good it means that any future titles using the same engine will more likely have mod tools near release.

Finally!

I really can’t wait to see what the community comes up with!

No one will bother with it tho, because to do the ‘Megertexters’ you will need to wait anywhere from 23 min to 2 hours for shit to render/make….

interesting film about megatextures

so i got drunk and i woke up in an alternate universe where rage is still the….rage?!

I’ll be surprised if we see anything.

TYPICAL BUILD TIMES:
• Initial map loads: 20–60 minutes
• Load times after initial load: 1–3 minutes
• Build an asset mod (does not include any maps): 10–30 minutes
• Build a mod that includes one map about the size of Wellspring: 20–40 minutes

The time to bake a map is dependent on the size of the map and number of entities included. Fully built maps like The Well, Wellspring, and Dusty 8 can take several hours to build on a local system.

“Doing significant work will require patience, because internally we use a 300 core renderfarm for megatexture creation.”

At the end of the day, I could just play my heavily modded Fallout 3/NV games which I’ve worked on over the last few years. RAGE sits on my shelf, while I try to forget how much I paid for it.

Some fairly good shooty action, nothing more.

vcatkiller,

No.

Multiplayer was terrible. Single player was okish. But from now on I won’t be automatically buying an ID title until I’ve seen a solid bunch of reviews. They’ve lost their way and aren’t really relevant anymore.

This is too little too late.

mindsnare,

Thought that was the case. I’d go as far as saying the single player was less than okish tbh though. I can’t think of a single thing about Rage that pulled me in at all.

They’ve lost their way

no they haven’t, they’ve always been about developing new technology

Wolfenstein sucked, but paved the way for Doom. I’m looking forward to where the technology in Rage goes…
