Great article :)

BUT…

There was worse :) I managed to walk a copy of Manhunt 2 into the country at one stage… for the WII!

Thats right, picture Manhunt 2, but the force that you smash that guys head into the toilet bowel depended on the force you exerted with your WII remotes!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJEj-9YkMNo

It was seriously wrong.

But right

Wow. Thanks for all the kind words folks.

Yeah, the actual content of the game sure is a sticky subject but I think in regards to how it was banned, its irrelevant. The banning wasn't based off what was in the game but more a reaction to it being 'controversial' because of the murder. It's such a strange collection of events.

I've checked out Manhunt 2 and maaaaaan, the violence in that is so OTT parody (shovelling a dude's head off etc).

Dont know why all the hate for it on the forums, to me i played the game like a modern day tenchu stealth assassins (least there wasnt any fat doughnut guards like in the bonus stage). i found the stealth mechanics awesome and terrifying sitting in a dark corner listening to the skinheads insults and cat calls and watching them search around areas close to me, for me it had the same atmospheric grip as does amenisa: dark desent. but i do agree this is a game that needed a r18 plus and if i remeber correctly my ps2 copy had the little r18 circle thing on the back of the case, was a copy i got off the shelf at an eb easy as piss. things that did turn me off it was the controls when to 1st person mode when useing the other analog stick, gunplay later levels, and some kills just made me cringe ( not a torcher pron lover, hate saw, hostel ect). There were bugger all good stealth games at the time and this was more involved as you had to be quite watch the ground were you stepped and hid bodies, or leave them somewere were you want the guards to go and investigate. migh not sound like much but it was better stealth then hid in box and shoot with trancs, or having overpowered gadgets that other games give you to make it easy.

dammit gonna be hunting this down throguh my old games boxes and a good ps2 emulator now!

o and if anyone likes yahzee's reviews heres and old one of manhunt

Such a crap game, I played for an hour or so and never again, basically almost a full quicktime event game, 3 deaths for each weapon and no variability or variety in scene.
Bad graphics, standard controls, unoriginal story.

Just a shite game given attention because it was brutal.

Might have been an issue if the game was actually good.

Personally I think it is the same level of appeal that something like bum-fights exhibits.

Lowest common denominator and all that. Interesting for a couple of minutes then...

Not against video game violence in any way but the whole game was done in such a tasteless and dull manner.

Exactly the same kind of violence could easily be used in say something like Heavy Rain or The Walking Dead and it would have fit perfectly into the narrative. (obviously not constantly)

Great article :)

This was one of those games that opened my eyes to video game violence and the issue of a lack of an R18+. From memory i hired this game at around 14 from the local Game Traders and I have to admit I enjoyed the absolute hell out of it.

BUT...

There was worse :) I managed to walk a copy of Manhunt 2 into the country at one stage... for the WII!

Thats right, picture Manhunt 2, but the force that you smash that guys head into the toilet bowel depended on the force you exerted with your WII remotes!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJEj-9YkMNo

It was seriously wrong.

But right
surely, on some level that has to be worse than an animated plastic bag over a virtual character’s head.
both sides of the violent video game argument are militant and honestly equally wrong.

Most people at sometime in their life will snap emotionally we all break down we all have moments of angst especially teenagers growing up in the digital age it's quite easy to feel lost and without meaning I know at points I definitely have.

Sure video games won't "make" you go out and brutalize your neighbors, but if you have just slightly the wrong mentality is it impossible to believe they could contribute ? elevation of fantasy occurs all the time have the fantasy of wanting to find out what it's like to kill someone and experience it in a "realistic" scenario and if that kid snaps the risk of them elevating it from fantasy to something they actually do would surely increase.

Is that a reason to bad "A" game, of course not however there is a problem here there but it's not "violent games are evil", it's disturbed/depressed/angry teens/adolescents are not getting attention that they need and THAT is a real problem.

Games don't cause mental issues sure but they have to have some effect on those already disturbed, the games saying "there is no problem the media are being idiots need to adjust it to "there is a problem, games might contribute but we should do X rather than attempt to ban games".

I really think both sides need to calm down to see what the issue here actually is how much impact it is and how it can be mitigated instead of assigning blame like children.

Great point of view, a well written article. The crazy Mortal Kombat violence seems to do it in a 'tongue in cheek' kind of way.

I have never played the game manhunt but that execution video, particularly the last one where the fat guy is pushing his guts back in the gaping wound and begging for mercy goes way too far!

This game best stay in the vault
